offering softball instruction
WEIRTON - The Weirton Baseball Association will offer free softball hitting, fielding and throwing instruction to all association members.
Participants will receive group and individual instruction on basic skills and live hitting in the batting cage.
Classes will be held Friday evening from Friday to Feb. 21. The under-8 and under-10 class will be held from 6 p.m. to 7:15 p.m., and the under-12 and under-15 class will be held from 7:15 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. If a class is canceled because of inclement weather, that information will be posted on the association website by 5 p.m. the day of the class.
Class sizes are limited; those interested must reserve a spot. Those interested in the U-8 and U-10 class, contact Dave Brenneman at (304) 479-9309, and those interested in the U-12 and U-15 class, contact Rod Rosnick at (304) 670-0950.
Library to hold pie contests
WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will celebrate National Pie Day with a pie-baking contest, pie-eating contest for children and a pie walk at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 23.
Bakers may enter their favorite fruit, cream or other type of pie. All pies must be homemade. Each contestant is required to bring two pies: one for judging and sampling and one for the pie walk.
Registration forms may be picked up at the Brooke County Library or its Follansbee branch. Pies must be dropped off at the Brooke County Library by 2 p.m. Jan. 23.
Children, preschool age to age 12, may compete in the pie eating contest and should register by calling (304) 737-1551 by Jan. 21.
Everyone is invited to try their luck in the pie walk. Participants will walk to music and if they land on a lucky spot, take home a pie.
WBA holding registration
WEIRTON - The Weirton Baseball Association will hold baseball and softball registration from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 25 and Feb. 1 and 8 at the Millsop Community Center.
Registration cost for the 2014 season is $70 per player with a $140 maximum per family.
Those who register on or before Feb. 1 receive an early registration discount of $60 per player with a $120 maximum per family.
Fitness fundraiser set
WEIRTON - Amanda Pulice, Zumba instructor, will hold a fitness fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 1 at the Weirton Madonna High School gym.
The cost is $10, and the event benefits the Madonna Class of 2015.
Free shoe fittings offered
WINTERSVILLE, Ohio - Medi Home Care will give free exams and shoe-fittings for diabetic shoes from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 6 at the facility located at 105 Main St.

Senior center to host trip
WEIRTON - The Greater Weirton Senior Center will host a trip to Atlantic City March 24-27.
The trip includes transportation, four meals, a casino bonus, sight-seeing, shows and gaming. The cost is $235 for double occupancy and reservations with payment in full must be made by Jan. 31.

Traubert receives license
WELLSBURG - Michael Traubert of Wellsburg has received an expanded license from USA Boxing Inc. of Colorado Springs, Colo., allowing him to serve as a coach, judge, time keeper and clerk through the Allegheny Mountain Boxing Association.
A lifelong boxing fan and former volunteer with the Brooke County Athletic Association Boxing Team, Traubert has been licensed through the AMBA since 1983. He has served as ring announcer for various area boxing events.

MCDONALD, Pa. - The Heritage Public Library's hall is available for rent to the public for parties, showers, meetings and other events.
The hall accommodates up to 50 people and includes the hall and a small kitchen. The cost is $60.
For an additional $10, those renting the hall may use the ceiling-mounted projector to display pictures or show a movie.
The Ohio Valley Venom under-12 travel baseball team seeks players for the 2014 Spring season.

Local seniors and other vulnerable groups are reminded to "ICE" their cell phones by loading an emergency contact with the acronym "ICE - In Case of Emergency" in front of the contact's name, so first responders and law enforcement officers can quickly locate the emergency contact.
When "ICEing" a phone:
Chose an emergency contact and make sure they are available and willing to be the emergency contact.
Under "I" in the contact list, load the contact name with the acronym in front of their name, for example, "ICE - Name."
Include all of the contact's phone numbers, including home, cell and work numbers.

NEW CONCORD, Ohio - Matthew DeAngelis of Follansbee has been named to the fall dean's list at Muskingum University.
To be named to the Dean's List, Muskingum students must attain strictly prescribed levels of academic performance in their overall grade point average.
