FUS women win close one
BRADFORD, Pa. - The Franciscan University of Steubevnille women's basketball team edged Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference opponent Pitt-Bradford Sunday, 65-63.
"I am so excited for our team and our program coming off of two big wins back-to-back this weekend," head coach Suzy Delaney said.
The Lady Barons, who held an 11-point halftime lead, improve to 4-7 overall and 3-3 in conference action.
"They were clawing back into the game a few points at a time but you could just see it in our girls' eyes that they were determined and had their composure," Delaney said. "Our two captains, Helen (Raines) and Lacey (Huck) have really set the tone and our team is following their lead."
A conventional three-point play by Monica Dawyot gave FUS a 62-59 lead with less than two minutes to play.
Katie Rhodes led the winners with 18 points. Dani Link added 14. The Barons shot 89 percent from the free throw line.
The Lady Barons travel LaRoche College for an 8 p.m. game on Wednesday.
FUS men lose
BRADFORD, Pa. - The Franciscan University of Steubevnille men's basketball team dropped a 73-64 decision at Pitt-Bradford Sunday.
The Barons held a 31-30 lead at the break.
"We played some of the best defense we've played all season in the first half," head coach John Lamanna said.
"We missed some open shots (in the second half) and then all the sudden our defense got a lot looser. It just puts so much pressure on your defense to have to come through possession after possession."
FUS visits La Roche College at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
