Delbert C. Freeman

FREEMAN, Delbert C., 82, of Steubenville, OH, passed away at UPMC Presbyterian Hospital on Monday, Jan. 20, 2014.

He was a 30-year employee at Wheeling - Pittsburgh Steel in Steubenville, OH. Prior to his work as an industrial mechanic, Delbert served in the armed forces during the Korean War. His Army unit was stationed in Germany.

After the war Delbert became known locally for his self-taught musical ability. Over the decades he played his Hammond B3 organ as a member of The Ohio Supremes. The band played various venues throughout the tri-state area and opened for many acts including jazz recording artist Jack McDuff.

Raised in historical McIntyre, OH, Delbert and his twin Darryl were the last boys born of eight children to William O. Freeman and Jessie Smith Freeman.

Delbert was predeceased by his wife, Jay P. Freeman of 20 years.

Delbert leaves to mourn his passing and cherish his memory his step-daughter, Nichole Goldsmith of Laurel, MD: brother, Samuel Freeman of Cleveland, OH; eldest niece, Twila Porter of Cleveland, OH and a host of nieces, nephews and their families.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Shaffer Chapel AME Church, McIntyre, OH with Pastor Melody Essex and Rev. Mary Ann Smith officiating.

Wake is Thursday at Vinson House of Mortuary for 6-8 p.m.

Arrangements are in the care of Vinson House of Mortuary, Steubenville, OH.
