STEUBENVILLE - In this case, red means go. The Steubenville boys' basketball team likes to play at a fast pace, and Big Red was able to do just that for the majority of its game against St. Clairsville Wednesday night at the Crimson Center. Steubenville scored in double digits in all four quarters and the hosts led by as many as 23 points en route to a 69-60 victory over the Red Devils.
"We want to put pressure on teams," Big Red coach Mike Haney said. "We want to play full court. We want to get after it. Our game plan is to play full-court defense and let our press cause turnovers. Offensively, we want to push the ball up the other end of the court."
St. Clairsville fared better when the game was played in a half-court fashion.

"We played really well in the halfcourt," St. Clairsville coach Kim Clifford said. "Defensively, we made them make some shots. I thought we did OK, but they blistered us down the floor. When they got rebounds, they did a nice job of pushing the ball down the court."
Big Red (11-2) led 61-38 early in the fourth quarter. Later, St. Clairsville collected nine straight points to pull within 67-53. The Red Devils (7-6) ended the game on a 7-1 spurt, but it was not enough.
Eight Big Red players scored , including three who reached double digits. Brandon Herring-Hill tallied a game-high 20 points, Chris Smith collected 14 and Adam Sterling netted 10.
"He made some really good shots," Clifford said about Herring-Hill's performance. "He got some good looks early in the game. He made some tough shots later in the game. He played a real-nice game."
Also, Lucas Herrington and Charles Reeves each recorded eight points, Dionee Wallace contributed four and Khaliq Bougard delivered three points.
"They hurt us with their penetration," Clifford said. "They hit some nice shots in transition."
Daniel Trouten and Michael Scarnecchia each netted 15 points to lead the way for the Red Devils.
"They played hard," Haney said. "They got after it. We were able to get up and down the court, and I think they got a little tired."
A 3-pointer by Trouten pulled the Red Devils to within 11-10, and St. Clairsville got the ball back with a chance to take the lead. Near midcourt, Reeves intercepted a pass, and he drove in for a dunk which gave Big Red a three-point lead.
The dunk proved to be the spark Big Red needed as it led 17-12 at the end of the first quarter. The dunk was one of three Reeves had in the game.
"In high school, dunks really energize the team and the crowd," Haney said. "They helped them get into it."
The dunk was the first points in what proved to be a 17-4 run as Big Red built a 28-14 advantage with 4:47 left to play in the first half.
Big Red led 34-18 at halftime and kept a foot on the accelerator in the third quarter. It netted 24 points in the stanza to take a 58-38 lead into the fourth quarter.
The game was St. Clairsville's eighth road game out of its last nine games. The Red Devils finished the game 11 of 11 from the free-throw line.
In pregame, Big Red senior girls' basketball player Emiley Masloski was honored for surpassing the 1,000 point mark for her career. The Big Red girls are scheduled to play a makeup game tonight at Brooke.
Big Red and the Red Devils are scheduled to return to the court Friday night with Steubenville traveling to Beaver Local and St. Clairsville hosting Buckeye Local.
