Lunch and Learn looks at new
equivalency diploma test
WEIRTON - David DeFelice, J.D. Rockefeller Career Center adult basic education instructor, will present information on the new West Virginia High School Equivalency Diploma from noon to 1:30 p.m. today at the Mary H. Weir Public Library located at 3442 Main St.
Those interested in learning about the exam, which replaces the General Equivalency Diploma, are welcome to attend the Lunch and Learn program. A light lunch will be provided for those who attend.

Fundraiser benefits Garan family
WEIRTON - The Weirton and East Liverpool, Ohio, Bob Evans Restaurants will hold fundraisers for the Tonia Garan family from open to close Sunday through Feb. 15.
Those having a flyer or mentioning the fundraiser will have 15 percent of their check donated to the Garan family, including Tonia Garan's sons, Alex and Mark.
"Bob Evans is all about helping out members of our community during rough times," says General Manager Tim Moser. "With the help of our community we hope to raise money for the Garan family during this time."
Bob Evans has donated more than $500,000 in 2013 through its Community Fundraiser program.
Library to screen film
WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will be showing the PG-13-rated film "Captain Phillips" at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
The film is based on the true story of Capt. Richard Phillips and the 2009 hijacking by Somali pirates of the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.

Church to hold sandwich sale
WELLSBURG - Christ Episcopal Church will be selling roast beef sandwich lunches from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 13 at the church located at 1014 Main St.
The cost is $6.50, which includes sandwich, chips, beverage and a slice of mandarin orange sheet cake. Individual sandwiches are $4.50 each. Take-out and delivery, to local businesses and shut-ins, is available by calling (304) 737-3432 after 8:30 a.m. that day.
Story hour has snowman theme
WELLSBURG - The Brooke County Public Library will be holding a snowman-themed evening storytime with Kim Harless at 5:30 p.m. Feb.13.

Local author holding book signing
WEIRTON - Hoy Van Horn, Weirton resident and author, will be signing copies of his book, "Zeppy Riley," from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 18 at the Mary H. Weir Public Library located at 3442 Main St.
The story follows a group of nuclear power plant employees as they remove government modules from the plant and prepare to negotiate with the governor and president for their return.
Church holding ham dinner
WEIRTON - St. Thomas Episcopal Church will hold a ham dinner from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Feb. 21 at the church located on Three Springs Drive.

Elks holding wine-tasting
WEIRTON - The Weirton Elks Lodge 1801 will host the second annual wine-tasting from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Feb. 22 at the lodge located on Main Street.
