COLUMBUS - Steubenville sophomore Tariq Wilson continued to cruise through the Division II brackets at the Ohio High School State Wrestling Tournament on Friday.
Wilson finds himself one match away from becoming a state champion.
At the Jerome Schottenstein Center during Day 2 of competition, Wilson won two matches in the 113-pound division.
In the championship quarterfinals, he knocked off Paul Petras of Parma Padua Franciscan with an 8-2 decision. In the championship semifinals, Wilson earned a 9-7 decision over Seth Beard of Napoleon.
Today, Wilson meets Eli Stickley of St. Paris Graham Local in a bout for first place. Stickley, a junior, entered the state tournament with a record of 46-3. Wilson is currently 49-1, with his lone loss coming early in the season to Massillon Perry's Jake Donahue.
Big Red's other participant in the state tournament, Shawn Livingston, was eliminated from the consolation bracket on Friday. The 145-pound sophomore lost a 5-1 decision to Dallas Ambos of Wapakoneta.
In Division III, the three other local competitors also had their tournament runs end.
At 170 pounds, Steubenville Catholic Central's Leo Hermann began the day in the consolation bracket and earned a 4-1 decision over Wes Buettner of Delphos St. John. He was defeated in Round 2 of the consolation on a 2-1 decision at the hands of Jake Datz of Madison Plains.
Harrison Central's Brandon White earned a consolation win to begin the day, too. The sophomore beat Mitch Skleres of Pymatuning Valley on a 3-1 decision before falling to Kristopher Hill of Columbus Bishop Hartley on a 5-2 decision.
Junior Hunter Pizzino, also of the Huskies, had a consolation bye in the first round. In Round 2, he fell to Norwalk St. Paul's Wes Fritz by a 3-1 decision.
Today, the consolation bouts begin at 10 a.m. and the championship rounds will get underway at 5:30 p.m.
