Lady Barons grab softball win
CLAIRMONT, Fla. - The Franciscan University of Steubenville softball team won its first game since April 30, 2011, when Rosemary Cassidy scored on a wild pitch for a 4-3 win over Anna Maria College Thursday. The Lady Barons then dropped a 21-0 count to Stevenson University.
"It was a long time coming so it was great to finally get one," second year head coach Jen Parker said. "They had their heads in that game and played really smart. They were just really together."
Pitcher Ashley Ruttencutter reached first and was doubled home by Kim Muscat. Katrina Fabian followed with an inside-the-park home run and it was 3-3.
Cassidy reached first, moved to second on a single by Elizabeth Knab and stole third.
Ruttencutter finished with three strikeouts and six walks.
"She did amazing. I thought about taking her out in the fifth inner just to get her some rest and she told me she wanted to stay in," Parker said about her pitcher who only started pitching two weeks before the beginning of the season.
FUS plays Worcester Polytechnic Institute and Lancaster Bible College today.
FUS women's lacrosse loses
WESTERVILLE, Ohio - The Franciscan University of Steubenville women's lacrosse team lost, 20-2, at Otterbein University Thursday.
"I think the second half was better," FUS head coach Maura Conant said.
Jessica Bestgen and Tracy McClelland scored for the Barons, who visit Wilmington College at 4 p.m. today.
FUS men's tennis loses
CLERMONT, Fla. - The Franciscan University of Steubenville men's tennis team lost 9-0 to Palm Beach Atlantic on Thursday.
"It was a good match, especially playing a Division II school," head coach Jeremy Ellis said. "We knew it would be tough going in but it was a good match all around. Our number one singles and doubles played very tough especially at this level.
The Barons visit Penn State-Altoona at 3:30 p.m. on March 21.
