To the Editor,
I recently saw a picture of two children, 7 and 9 years of age, in a watermelon eating contest. A week ago I saw on TV that a young person won a hot dog eating contest, consuming 69 dogs in 10 minutes. WOW! I've heard of pie eating contests for many years.
I don't know what most people think about these kind of events, but I have a sense of disgust when I hear, read, or see TV news about them.
There are litterly millions of people, mainly kids, starving each day and how we, supposedly a nation of humanitarians, could promote and support such animalistic and gluttonous acts for the world to see is simply outrageous. What are we teaching our kids when we show disregard of food [a God given gift]?
I can remember my mom kissing a piece of bread in thanks to God for having some.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not a kill-joy to disapprove of fun games, but I think there are thousands of ways to have fun competitively or otherwise.
I truly believe a waste of food is simply a sinful wrong.
I think a slice of watermelon, piece of pie, a hot dog distributed to some kids and parents would be most satisfying and appreciated a lot more than to see this food splashed all over some ones face. Funny? I guess! Wrong? Absolutely!!
Lets show more mannerism and less piggishness.
