Sun protection awareness

Tri-State Medical Group will host an informational booth 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday at Tri-State Pharmacy, 651 Colliers Way, Weirton, to raise awareness of the importance of sun protection. Kelley Stevens, pictured, a Doctor of Pharmacy candidate from West Virginia University currently on rotation at Tri-State Pharmacy, will provide informational packets, as well as ultra-violet, color-changing bracelets for area children. Those stopping by the booth also will have an opportunity to win a gift basket. According to the National Cancer Institute and Centers for Disease, West Virginia has the third-highest reported death rate from melanoma. The rate of new melanoma diagneses in the state rose nearly 5 percent each year from 2005 to 2009. -- Contributed
