WEIRTON The Hancock County Commission has secured a $10,000 grant for upgrades at Starvaggi Memorial Pool in Weirton, including ongoing renovations to the locker rooms and office area.
"We're very thankful to the commission for their help with the project. This grant will allow us to complete it and make this a much nicer facility," commented Terry Weigel, director of the Weirton Parks and Recreation department and Ward 7 Councilman.
"Joint efforts with the Northern Panhandle delegation have resulted in a great, open policy where we all try to help each other as much as we can. We appreciate what the Parks Board has done here, and I'm happy to be a part of it," said Hancock County Commissioner Jeff Davis.

The grant comes in addition to another $10,000 grant obtained through the state Senate thanks to the efforts of Del. Ronnie Jones, D-Hancock, state Sen. Jack Yost, D-Wellsburg, state Sen. Rocky Fitzsimmons, D-Wheeling, and Del. Randy Swartzmiller, D-Hancock.
"I want to say thank you to the staff, because nearly everything was done in-house, otherwise we would not have been able to do it," Jones said. "Good things happen when everyone gets together on a project."
The J.C. Williams Foundation also contributed $25,000 to the renovations, which Weigel hopes will be completed by next summer.
Some of the changes have made the pool more easily accessible for handicapped individuals. The finished women's locker room features a handicap accessible shower and bathroom stall, and Weigel said the men's locker room will be set up to match. There also are two handicap accessible picnic tables in the deck area and a chair lift for the pool.
