Lady Barons reach playoffs

STEUBENVILLE — Senior Megan Luiso led the Franciscan University of Steubenville women’s soccer team to an AMCC playoff-clinching win over Penn State-Altoona as the Lady Barons defeated the Lions, 3-1, Wednesday afternoon.

Luiso finished the day with her first career hat trick as she pushed her season goal total to seven, marking the highest goal total of her career. Luiso has been a spark for the Lady Baron offense and has three of the team’s seven game-winning goals.

While the win clinches the Lady Barons a playoff spot, they still have one game left to help secure a home game. Franciscan will travel to Medaille on Saturday and face the Mavericks at 3:30 p.m. in the final regular season AMCC contest.

Men’s team also clinches

STEUBENVILLE — The Franciscan University of Steubenville men’s soccer team secured their second straight AMCC tournament appearance with a 4-0 win over Penn State-Altoona Wednesday afternoon, highlighted by senior Leo Herrmann’s first hat trick of the season.

The last time the Barons defeated Altoona was when head coach Christian Bobak took the field in a Baron uniform alongside assistant coach Zeph Swope in 2009.

The coaching duo weren’t the only familiar faces in the Barons’ second program win over the Lions as center ref Gregg Day managed the game for both contests.

The Barons wrap up the regular season on Saturday as they travel to Medaille for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
