Central boys top Bellaire

STEUBENVILLE — Sharp-shooting seniors A.J. Connor and Donnie Vandeborne combined for 55 points Saturday as Catholic Central whipped Bellaire 70-56 inside the Mickey Barber Gymnasium.

Connor led the now 3-0 Crusaders with 32 points. He connected six times from behind the arc. Vandeborne finished with 23, six of those points coming via the long ball. Chris Tarquinio’s club led 17-13 after the opening period and was up 31-23 at the half. Heading into the final eight minutes, Central held a 53-37 advantage.

“The kids came ready to play tonight,” said Tarquinio. “A.J. and Donnie both had outstanding games for us. They’re our leaders and they really came up big for us.” Senior ace Chase Yoho paced the Big Reds, now 2-2 under first-year coach Ben Doyle, with 27 points. Jacob Maethaler contributed 19.

The Crusaders are idle until Friday when they host Madonna, which will be playing its season opener.

Big Red booster to meet

STEUBENVILLE — The Big Red Boosters Club will meet on Monday at 6 p.m. at the high school main office conference room. All are welcome. Memberships and 500 club tickets available.

Bengals Jones goes on injury list

CINCINNATI — The Bengals put cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones on injured reserve Saturday, ending his season with a groin injury.

Jones is one of at least six starters who isn’t expected to play Sunday against the Bears (3-9) at Paul Brown Stadium. The Bengals (5-7) suffered significant losses at cornerback during a 23-20 loss to Pittsburgh on Monday night, when Jones got hurt while making an interception.

Butler tops YSU 95-67

INDIANAPOLIS — Kamar Baldwin scored 19 points, Paul Jorgensen and Kelan Martin had 15 apiece and Butler coasted to a 95-67 win over Youngstown State on Saturday.

Martin had 11 in the first half when the Bulldogs (8-2) made half of their 10 3-pointers and shot 57 percent overall to race to a 48-23 lead.
