Columbiana dominates Toronto girls

TORONTO — The Columbiana girls’ basketball team completely dominated Toronto in all four quarters en route to a 100-27 victory in an Eastern Ohio Athletic Conference matchup Monday night inside the George J. Gunzler Memorial Gymnasium.

“There are positives we can take from this,” Toronto (2-6) head coach Rusty Hodgkiss said. “At no point did we collapse. We didn’t pack it in and say enough. We fought. We didn’t quit. We continued to fight. They are really good.”

The Clippers led 23-3 after the first quarter, 50-10 at halftime and 81-15 at the end of the third.

“Our kids played exceptionally well,” Columbiana (7-0) head coach Ron Moschella said. “We hit the 3 really well when you look at the number of 3s we took, and our younger kids did that. We are good in the halfcourt. We get the rebound, and we go down and score. These girls have worked hard. They are a good team, and I think they have proven that.

“Toronto played really well. They hung in there. They ran into a buzzsaw tonight. I have a lot of respect for their coach. He understands.”

Columbiana made 13 3-pointers in the game — nine of which came in the second half. Toronto made four 3-pointers.

Six players scored in the game for the Red Knights. Jozaeyah Jordan and Sydney Taggart each tallied seven points.

Eight players scored for the Clippers. Kayla Muslovski scored a game-high 29 points, Taylor Hall tallied 21 and Kennedy Fullom finished with 14.

“I think this is one you don’t want to forget about,” Hodgkiss said. “I think this is one you want to remember. We really struggled. I don’t know how many turnovers we had, but it felt like a million. This was a good indicator for us. I don’t think we are as bad as we played. I think we are a lot better than we showed. We talk about controlling the things you can control. How well the other team plays is not something you can control.”

Toronto is scheduled to play Thursday at Leetonia, while Columbiana is slated to play Thursday at home against United.

Columbiana won the JV game, 31-21. Riley Kinsey collected seven points for the Red Knights, while Morgan Dunlap delivered nine points for the Clippers.
