SALEM — Big Red earned its fifth consecutive berth in a regional championship game thanks to a second quarter explosion and a huge final period defensive stop to eliminate Cardinal Mooney 19-14 on Nov. 10 in Salem.

Steubenville spotted Youngstown Cardinal Mooney a 7-0 lead, then reeled off 19 unanswered points. It wasn’t until the defense came up with a big stop with less than a minute to go, however, that the regional semifinal triumph was guaranteed.

Quentin Moore pounced on a Cardinal fumble with 31 seconds to play, Javon Davis took a knee on the final snap and Big Red had the win over its playoff nemesis inside a jam-packed Reilly Stadium.

Jacob Bernard continued to shine for Big Red, rushing for 194 yards and two touchdowns. Javon Davis passed for just 60 yards, but one of his completions went to DaJuan Jones for a 12-yard second quarter score.

The regional semifinal meeting was the ninth all-time between Big Red and Mooney. All previous contests took place during the playoffs. The Cardinals lead the series with Big Red 7-2.
