WELLSBURG — The Brooke boys basketball team rebounded from both a loss the night before and a first half deficit on Friday night to defeat rival Weir High, 65-55, inside the Brooke Wellness Center.

“We have two rivalry games back-to-back with Wheeling Park (Thursday) and Weir,” Brooke coach Cameron Koehler said. “My guys came out a little flat and were tired. Weir came in and played hard, they were hitting shots, playing aggressive and really put us back on our heels at the start of the game. I give them a lot of credit for coming out with the energy that they did, especially on our home court.

“I’m proud of our guys and how they responded to get the win.”

The Red Riders (3-8) scored the first eight points of the contest, but Brooke (5-7) battled back to a 24-24 tie at halftime.

The second half belonged to the Bruins.

After an early 6-0 Weir run, Brooke responded with an 11-0 run to take its first lead and never looked back, fending off several Red Rider charges late before pulling away.

“We’ve got a bunch of seniors that have been through this situation,” Koehler said. “We’ve been down before. They’re starting to learn to take advantage of what we are capable of doing. We’re closing out games better than we have before.”

The Bruins did most of their damage from the foul line, scoring 26 points on free throws.

“Really the free throw line saved us tonight,” Koehler said. “We shot pretty well from the lime, especially in the second half, and that dug us out of the hole.”

Weir pulled within one point three separate times in the fourth quarter, but the Bruins went on a late 9-0 run to get some needed breathing room, eventually going on to win by 10.

Brooke was led by 13 points from Evan Cuomo, and got 11 from Justin Pennybacker off the bench.

Weir got a game-high 18 points from Cameron Pierce, and 15 from Reed Reitter.

Game notes:

≤ Weir won the jayvee game, 50-31. Skylar Jackson led the Red Riders with 11, while the Bruins got 13 from Alex Lilly.
