Local bowlers compete at sectional tournament

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — A veteran duo will represent the area at next week’s district bowling tournament after posting fine efforts in sectional action Thursday.

St. Clairsville’s Annelise Dumas and Bridgeport’s Kaity Tennant qualified as individuals for the Division II girls’ event in New Philadelphia after finishing in the top 10 inside St. Clair Lanes.

By producing two of the top four scores of competitors on non-qualifying teams, Dumas and Tennant earned the right to compete Feb. 24 at Wabash Lanes. The top two team finishers there, along with the top two individuals not on qualifying squads, reach the state tournament in Columbus.

“It was OK,” Dumas said of her 570 score, which slotted her sixth overall and second among individuals on non-qualifying teams. “I was more worried about helping my team out more than anything. I wanted to go as a team, but I knew it was going to be hard.”

For Tennant, also a senior, returning to the district tournament fulfills a season-long goal.

“I just really had to focus and hit marks,” she said after registering a three-game total of 527, third among individuals on non-qualifying squads. “Staying accurate was important, too.”

Minerva topped the 18-team field with a score of 3,891, led by sophomore Megan Keister, who unseated Dumas as sectional champ with a 715.

Keister thrilled the standing-room only crowd by rolling a 300 game in her finale. She also fired games of 191 and 224. Her teammate, Katlyn Smalley, was second overall with a 658.

Claymont was second with a score of 3,657. Freshman Payton Milburn (564) and senior Breanna Hartline (534) guided the Mustangs.

Sandy Valley was third at 3,331, buoyed by freshman Hannah Deford’s third-place showing (615).

Maysville grabbed the final team berth for districts with a score of 3,273. Kaylin Grant was tied for eighth with a 534.

Barnesville missed qualifying for districts by three pins, finishing at 3,270. Union Local was seventh (3,197), while St. Clairsville was eighth (3,167). Rounding out the area contingent were: Buckeye Local (11th, 2,913), Harrison Central (12th, 2,856), Monroe Central (13th, 2,712), Bridgeport (14th, 2,626), East Richland Christian (15th, 2,616) and Martins Ferry (17th, 2,137).

Jocelyn Troyer of Garaway and Elizabeth Henline of Indian Valley were the other two individual qualifiers. They rolled games of 575 and 524, respectively.

Dumas steadily improved throughout the day, finishing with a 212 after opening with games of 157 and 201.

“It wasn’t easy,” she said. “My equipment didn’t fit me right. My equipment was falling off. My fingers were too sweaty. It wasn’t the best day. But I did what I could do.

“I’m still glad I get to (advance), being a senior.

“Honestly, it could’ve been a lot better. I can’t hang my head, though.”

Spares were an issue, Dumas concluded.

“Ten-pins were my biggest problem,” she said.

“For some reason, I wasn’t hitting them. I hope to have it all figured out by districts.”

Tennant, too, said she was having trouble, at times, finding her mark, but was able to put things together enough to get the job done.

“The most important thing is picking up spares,” she said.

Tennant, 10th overall, posted scores of 183, 172 and 172.

“I was able to start strong,” she said.

Monroe Central’s Shaylei Giesey finished two pins back of the final individual berth, while Buckeye Local’s Katie Rogers posted a 512.

Union Local’s Hannah Miller (17th, 496) and the Seminoles’ Aly Erickson (19th, 483) also posted top 20 showings.

Boys’ sectional action takes place Saturday beginning at 10 a.m., also at St. Clair Lanes.
