Volleyball event upcoming

STEUBENVILLE — Franciscan University’ will host its annual Side-Out Foundation Dig Pink Day on Sept. 8, to support breast cancer research.

Catholic Central will begin the event at Finnegan Fieldhouse at 10 a.m. against Bellaire St. John Central.

At noon, Franciscan and Oberlin play on court one, and La Roche and Geneva on court two.

At 2 p.m., Franciscan plays Geneva on court one, and La Roche and Oberlin play on court two.

At 4 p.m., Edison will play Steubenville on court one, and Brooke will play Beaver Local on court two.

Admission is $5 for adults and $2 for students and senior citizens.

Fans will be able to participate in a high school serving contest at $1 per person. Prizes include pizza and T-shirts from Franciscan and local high schools.

The serving contests will take place after the 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. matches. There also will be a Chinese auction with baskets valued at $100 each, a 50/50 drawing, and Courtside Couch tickets.

Proceeds support the Side-Out Foundation’s clinical trials for patients with stage 4 breast cancer and the Tony Teramana Cancer Center’s Trinity Emergency Assistance Relief Fund, which lessens the burdens of individuals receiving cancer treatment.

Hole-in-one reported

RICHMOND — John Gallagher of Moon Township, Pa., hit a hole-in-one on the 15th hole at Blackmoor Golf Course, using a 5-wood.

Big Red’s fall league upcoming

STEUBENVILLE — Registrations now are being accepted for Big Red’s annual Girls Basketball Fall League.

The league will run on Sundays from Sept. 16 to Oct. 21. There again will be middle school and high school divisions. Games will be played in the Crimson Center and Stern Gymnasium.

Per OHSAA rules, only two players from the same school will be allowed on a team. All players will play two officiated games each Sunday, with games being played between noon and 4 p.m.

The cost is $80 per player. All participating will receive two fall league T-shirts.
