Big Red girls too much for Wildcats
STEUBENVILLE — The Steubenville girls soccer team got on a roll, and Edison could not slow it down.
Big Red got off to a bit of a slow start, but it came alive about 16 minutes in and never looked back, en route to an 8-0 victory over the Wildcats Saturday afternoon at Harding Stadium.
“We came out a little flat, but once we started to roll we started connecting, and we got back to doing what we do. That is play soccer,” Big Red (5-0) head coach Jared Robinson said.
Big Red collected five goals in the first half and tallied three more in the second.
“We started off well, but once they got that first goal in on that followup to the PK, the goals just started going for Big Red,” Edison (1-4) head coach Jordan Tice said.
Jadyn Bennett netted a hat trick to lead the way for Big Red. Also, Jordan Sarjeant recorded a pair of goals, while Libby Saccoccia, Mary Marshall and Michaela Brancazio all delivered one. Anastasia Crisant contributed two assists, while Chloe Petrelle, Ciarra Turner and Marshall each chipped in one.
Zoe Nocera and Lakyn Blackburn each made two saves in goal for Big Red.
“Edison always plays us tough,” Robinson said. “When Edison and Big Red play, both teams leave everything on the field. Today, we just started clicking. We had the momentum going. We were able to capitalize on our opportunities.”
Alli Grimes made 13 saves for Edison.
“They did great today,” Tice said about Big Red. “They work well together.”
Big Red played strong defensively as it was able to contain Edison standout Lauren Ferralli.
“Our defense is tough,” Robinson said. “Our defense is very tough this year. They always know our game plan. They know what to do, and they do it. They distribute the ball from the back to where we can play it offensively. They help our offense get on a roll. It was a total team effort.
“We have girls contribute every single game. We are playing really well. That is a good thing.”
Robinson said he was not sure if a Big Red team has ever started 5-0 before this one.
“Honestly, I don’t know,” he said. “We have a fabulous group of girls. They are a tough group. They just want to represent Big Red to the fullest. They leave it all on the field.”
Edison is scheduled to play again against Harrison Central at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday on the road. Big Red is scheduled to host St. Clairsville at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
“It is going to be a tough game,” Robinson said. “It is going to be back and forth. We are excited to be able to play the game here.”
The Big Red boys’ soccer team will be playing St. Clairsville Tuesday at home. The start of that game has been pushed back to 7:30 p.m. There will be no JV game afterward.
