Oak Glen wins tournament

NEW MANCHESTER — The Oak Glen volleyball team won its own tournament, the Oak Glen Volleyball Invitational, on Saturday.

The Golden Bears bested Magnolia in the championship, 25-19, 25-18. They defeated Parkersburg South, 25-22, 25-14, in the semifinals. Magolia made it to the final after knocking off Tyler Consolidated, 25-18, 26-24.

In the first match of the tournament on court No. 1, Oak Glen defeated Madonna, 25-9, 25-13. Next, Tyler bested North Marion, 25-12, 25-6. Oak Glen then defeated North Marion, 25-10, 25-8. Tyler won again, this time against Madonna, 25-11, 25-20. Madonna then eliminated North Marion, 25-11, 25-23. Finally, Oak Glen defeated Tyler, 25-8, 25-16.

On court No. 2, Brooke defeated Weir, 25-17, 25-12. Magnolia followed up by defeating Parkersburg South, 25-17, 25-17. In the very next match, Magnolia downed Weir, 25-14, 25-19. Parkersburg South then defeated Brooke, 25-22, 26-24. Next, Magnolia eliminated Brooke, 25-17, 25-13. In the final contest, Parkersburg South eliminated Weir, 25-15, 25-16.

Overall for the Golden Bears, Hannah Rogers had 30 points, 35 kills, 15 digs, four aces and two blocks. Jaedyn Hissam recorded 107 assists and 36 points. McKayla Goodlin tallied 23 points, 24 kills and seven digs. Hanna Tice added 36 points, 19 kills and five blocks.

For the Bruins, Courtney Engle recorded 25 digs, 13 blocks, nine kills and four aces. Chloe Fox had 22 digs, 51 assists, 12 kills and three blocks. Maria Kamarados tallied 23 digs, 22 kills, three aces and two blocks. Landyn Haynes added 31 digs, 15 kills and three aces.

Big Red boys win third game

CAMBRIDGE — The Steubenville boys soccer team bested Cambridge, 2-1, on Saturday.

Noah Reinacher and Kwamai Hosdil scored for Big Red. Ian Phillips and Johnny Westlake recorded one assist each. Jacob Clevenger made four saves in goal.

Big Red now is 3-0 and will host St. Clairsville at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Oak Glen boys shut down Tyler

NEW MANCHESTER — The Oak Glen boys soccer team defeated Tyler Consolidated, 8-0, on Saturday.

Dan Dwoskin recorded a hat trick for the now 3-1-1 Golden Bears. Gage Bailey scored two goals, while Lucas Harris, Parker Provenzano and Blake Perez added one apiece. Harris and Seth Mozingo recorded two assists each. Bailey, Dwoskin, Perez and Jacob Clark had one assist each. Clark also made three saves in goal.

Oak Glen travels to Carrollton for a 6 p.m. game on Tuesday.

Big Red Boosters meeting Tuesday

STEUBENVILLE — The Big Red Boosters Club will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Harding Stadium Fieldhouse.

All are welcome and memberships are available.

Bethany falls in opener

BETHANY — The Bethany College football team lost its season opener to Ursinus, 34-13, on Saturday.

Bison quarterback Carlin Bason compiled 90 rushing yards on 20 carries and a touchdown, while completing 11 of 20 passes for 127 yards and another score. Kiandre Murphy paced the defense with 10 tackles (nine solo) and an interception. Joseph Fiasco added eight tackles.

The Bison host Grove City at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Butler stuns Youngstown State

YOUNGSTOWN — Will Marty threw two touchdowns in the fourth quarter, and Drew Bevelhimer drilled a 44-yard field goal with four seconds left as Butler stunned No. 24 Youngstown State, 23-21, on Saturday.

The Bulldogs were down 21-7 with 9:20 left in the game when Marty threw a 6-yard scoring pass to Pace Temple. He followed that with a 12-yard strike to Sam Yeaton. Marty’s 2-point conversion run failed.
