IC girls hand Big Red first loss of season

MINGO JUNCTION — The Indian Creek girls soccer team knocked Steubenville from the ranks of the undefeated.

The Redskins scored three goals less than 20 minutes into the match as they defeated rival Big Red, 3-2, on a soggy Saturday afternoon at Muth Field.

“Steubenville plays really tough,” Indian Creek (5-2) head coach Joe Lewis said. “They had not had a loss yet. They beat us last year, and they were undefeated this year. We wanted to beat them.”

Big Red shook off its slow start, but its deficit was too big to overcome.

“That’s what defined the game,” Big Red (6-1) head coach Jared Robinson said. “We got off to a bad start, and they capitalized on it. They scored three goals in that time period. Once our girls got into it, we played with them. Once we started to play and once we started to move, we were rolling again, and it was a much more evenly-played match. It was back and forth.”

Payton Gaydosh tallied two goals and an assist to lead the way for the Redskins. Abby Copeland delivered a goal and an assist, and Rileigh Gualtiere recorded an assist. Mackenzie Orban made four saves in goal.

Chloe Petrella and Jordan Sarjeant each collected a goal for Big Red. Both goals were unassisted. Zoe Nocera made four saves in goal.

Copeland opened the scoring about five minutes in to give Indian Creek a 1-0 lead. Gaydosh assisted on the goal as it came off of a corner kick. Gaydosh delivered her first goal of the game about 11 minutes later to increase Indian Creek’s advantage to 2-0. Gaydosh found the back of the net for the second time about three minutes later to make the score 3-0.

“I always tell the girls to come out and score early,” Lewis said. “We want to put pressure on the other team and force them to play from behind.”

Petrella produced Big Red’s first goal with around 10 minutes left to play in the first half. The goal gave Big Red a spark going into halftime.

Sarjeant capped the scoring with less than a minute left in the match.

The two teams will meet Oct. 6 at Harding Stadium.

Indian Creek is scheduled to host Beaver Local at 5:30 p.m. Monday. Meanwhile, Big Red is slated to play Linsly at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday on the road.
