Morgantown crushes Brooke

WELLSBURG — After consecutive losses to perennial powers Steubenville and Fort Hill, Md., Morgantown took out some frustration Friday night on Brooke.

The Mohigans piled up 495 total yards of offense, including 362 in a dominating first-half performance, while the defense limited the Bruins to 117 yards in rolling to a 63-6 thumping on the turf at Paul “Bud” Billiard Field inside Brooke Memorial Stadium.

Coach Matt Lucy’s Morgantown squad improves to 2-2, becoming the second team to score more than 60 points in a game at Brooke this season. Meanwhile, coach Mac McLean’s youthful Bruins fall to 0-3 with a date at Ripley on the schedule next Friday.

It took Morgantown exactly 1:25 to get the scoring onslaught going. Senior running back Ty Konchesky highlighted the four-play, 58-yard drive with a pair of 25-yard bursts, the second one, coupled with John McConnell’s point-after, making it a 7-0 lead.

Senior Tanner Davis made it a two-score advantage on the Mohigans’ next possession on a 5-yard burst at 6:41. The big play on the drive was a 42-yard strike from sophomore quarterback Cameron Rice to Preston Fox on a third-and-23 call.

Morgantown all but wrapped things up with a 28-point, second-quarter outburst, with Konchesky (14 yards) and Davis (1 yard) each scoring their second touchdowns and Kaden Rice hauling in scoring strikes of 23 and 26 yards to push it out to a 42-0 halftime score.

The Mohigans’ domination showed in not only the score, but also the first-half stats as they piled up 362 yards over the initial two quarters, while holding Brooke to 22 yards and without a first down.

After Morgantown cost itself another score in the third due to penalties, it used the defense to extend the lead. Junior Jackson Wolfe intercepted a Logan Williams pass that was deflected and traveled 15 yards to paydirt for a 49-0 count at 6:06.

With the reserves taking over in the fourth, each team benefited from long touchdown runs. Morgantown made it 57-0 on senior Luke Milne’s 66-yard burst and two-point conversion, while Brooke followed it shortly after sophomore Drake Hukill went 83 yards with 8:11 to play to make it 57-6.

The Mohigans capped the scoring with a 32-yard Rashad Alton run at 2:22 of the fourth.

“It’s good to get back to the winning ways,” Lacy said with a smile. “But, we still need to clean up some things. It’s just a little more fun to have to do it after a win. Penalties were definitely an issue (11-118) and that is on me.

Konchesky finished with 98 yards and two scores, all in the first half, while Cameron Rice threw for 122 yards and two more touchdowns. While Brooke finished with 117 total yards, 83 of those and one of their two first downs came on Hukill’s long run. Williams completed three passes after taking over for starting quarterback Gage Yost, who left with an injury in the first quarter.

“As a coach you want to avoid using excuses, but we are a young team that fought at times while starting mostly sophomores,” McLean said. “We watched Morgantown’s film against Steubenville and knew what they were capable of. They are just cut-and-dry better than us.

“But, there were positives, and we will just keep going out and working. A lot of things can happen with seven games left to play.”
