McIntyre earns football honors

WOOSTER – Steubenville Big Red graduate Jordan McIntyre was named the Offensive Player of the Year for the College of Wooster football team.

A slot receiver, McIntyre put together career-best statistics as a senior – 44 receptions, 532 yards and six touchdowns – in every receiving category to earn his first postseason recognition, an honorable mention selection in the All-North Coast Athletic Conference.

He was among the top-10 in the NCAC in receiving yardage and also carried the ball 13 times for 169 yards and another score. His best outings of the year came in back-to-back weeks as he had eight catches for 90 yards and two touchdowns at Case Western Reserve University, followed by a four-reception, 99-yard, two-touchdown effort against Hiram.

He finished his career as the program’s second all-time receptions leader. He is fifth in all-time receiving yardage and is tied for ninth with 10 touchdown receptions.

Local soccer referees sought

STEUBENVILLE – The Mahoning Valley Soccer Officials Association will host certification clinics for those interested in being licensed youth soccer referees.

A clinic for new referees will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on March 9. The cost is $100.

A re-certification clinic for existing Grade 8 or 9 referees will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. on March 23. The cost is $50.

Both clinics will be held at Eastern Gateway Community College, Room 2500, and require the completion of an online training portion prior to attending the clinic. Details can be found at www.ohnrefs.org.

Successful completion of the clinic and online training will earn applicants a 2013 United States Soccer Federation Grade 8 license, making them eligible to officiate recreational and travel soccer games, including those for the Jefferson Kiwanis Youth Soccer Club, at a rate of $10-$40 per game.

Panthers victorious again

RAYLAND – The Buckeye Local boys basketball team clinched its first winning season in 10 years with a 73-47 victory over visiting Bellaire Thursday.

“That’s really big for us,” Panthers coach Jay Morris said. “That was one of our goals this season to have a winning season. The last time we had a winning season here was in 2003. We had to win four of five game in the last seven days and that is just what we did.

“That’s the second time this season we played three straight nights. We started to fall behind in the second period, but we challenged the kids at halftime and they came out and played well in the second half.”

Kyle Michalo continued his torrid offensive streak with a game-high 32 points, giving him 88 in the past three victories.

John Rozenek added 16 points and Brennan Czuchran 11, to go along with nine rebounds each.

Buckeye Local, which was 1-20 two years ago, takes on Meadowbrook in sectional action on Feb. 22 at Ohio University-Eastern.

Lady Royals earn a win

MUNHALL, Pa. – The Jefferson County Christian girls basketball team finished the regular season 13-7 with a 32-23 over the Propel School Thursday.

Last game at Kunzler Gym

TORONTO – The Toronto boys basketball team will take on Wellsville at 6 p.m. on Feb. 23 in what will be the final basketball game inside the George J. Kunzler Memorial Gymnasium.

The Toronto High School Athletic Department invites all Red Knight fans, former basketball players, coaches, cheerleaders, and alumni to “Lights Out Knight,” a special event to celebrate Toronto High School’s rich basketball history.

The evening will feature special vocal and instrumental performances by current students, recognition of former coaches and record holders, and a brief ceremony at the conclusion of the boys’ varsity game to commemorate the last game.

Souvenir event tickets and programs will be handed out to fans while supplies last. Fans are asked to show their Red Knight pride by wearing red to the game.

WELLSBURG – Standout sophomore Angela Staffileno finished with a game-high 33 points, including hitting 17 free throws, to lead the Brooke girls basketball team to its second win in a row, a 60-49 decision over Oak Glen at the Brooke Wellness Center Monday evening.

Huskies buck Colts

CADIZ – Harrison Central’s Katie Ellzy and Meadowbrook’s Marissa Goodright went toe-to-toe all night long and, although Goodright won the individual battle, the Huskies came away with a 58-54 victory at home Monday night.

Rocks stop Crusaders

BARNESVILLE – The Barnesville girls basketball team used a huge fourth quarter to defeat visiting Steubenville Catholic Central 43-37 Monday.

The host Shamrocks outscored the Crusaders 18-3 in the final eight minutes to overcome a 34-25 deficit.

Tori Knight paced Central with 14 points.

Against OLP, Dom Mazur paced the Spartans with eight points while Nick Paul added six. Robbie Valenti and Evan Boniti chipped in with three points apiece.

In the win over McMechen, Boniti totaled nine points, Paul four and Mazur three. Jon Luke Horne made two free throws late in the game to secure the victory.

The Spartans finished the season 8-4.

Boxing event set for tonight

KNOXVILLE – A night of international amateur boxing, Canada vs. America, will be held tonight at Board’s Boxing located at Kelly’s Old Skool bar in Knoxville. Doors open at 6 p.m. with the fights beginning at 7:30 p.m. Admission is $15.

There are 16 fights scheduled including locals Tracer Yergan (Wellsville) and Glenn Mitchell (Steubenville). Concessions will be available.

Wrestling on tap at Big Red

STEUBENVILLE – The OHSAA Division II Regional Team Wrestling Tournament will be held at 7 p.m. today inside the Crimson Center at Steubenville High School.

Steubenville Big Red will take on Claymont for the Region 12 title and the right to head to the OHSAA quarterfinals Saturday in Columbus.

Entry is $7 per person as set by the OHSAA.

The Bill Hinegardner OVAC Dual Meet Championships will be held at Big Red Thursday for Class 4A and Class 2A/1A semifinals, finals and consolations. Those matches also will begin at 6 p.m.

Class 4A semifinals feature Steubenville against Martins Ferry and Harrison Central vs. Oak Glen. In Class 2A/1A, Shadyside will battle Toronto, while Caldwell faces Steubenville Catholic.

The winners will wrestling approximately 20 minutes after the semifinals.

Pleasant Hill to hold sign-ups

PLEASANT HILL – The Pleasant Hill Baseball and Softball League will hold registration from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday and Feb. 21 at Pleasant Hill Elementary and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and Feb. 23 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Registration fees are to be paid at time of registration. A copy of the player’s birth certificate is required.

Smithfield to hold registration

SMITHFIELD – The Smithfield Little League will hold sign-ups from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Smithfield Firehouse for T-ball (ages 5-6), Pinto (7-8), Mustang (9-10) and Bronco (11-12). Cost is $40 per child of $60 per family.

Softball sign-ups will also be held for ages 10-and-under, 14-and-under and 18-and-under. Fees are $50 per child and $10 for each additional family member.

BERGHOLZ – Sign-up for Bergholz baseball and softball will be held at the Bergholz Volunteer Fire Department from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Tuesday and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 23.

It is open to all boys and girls in the area with T-Ball for ages 5-6; coach pitch (7-8); and baseball/softball (9-14).

The cost is $40 for the first child in the family and $30 for each additional child in a family. The fee is payable at sign-up.
