FUS basketball seasons end with losses on road

BRADFORD, Pa. – The Franciscan University of Steubenville men’s and women’s basketball teams finished their respective seasons with a loss Saturday at the University of Pitt-Bradford.

The men dropped a 67-52 decision and the women 69-45.

“We will keep moving forward,” men’s head coach John Lamanna said. “At the beginning of next season we will return a strong core of young men.”

The Barons are the only team in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference to start four first-year players.

“We had times today where we played really well,” Lamanna said. “It came to a lack of experience. Our underclassmen are forced to become leaders. It will all come to fruition as they get older and more experienced.”

Freshman Justin Horstman scored a team-high 15 points and big man Joe Rine had his 10th double double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore forward Knorr Caleb added eight points off the bench.

The women finished the year 4-21 overall and 3-14 in conference play.

Sophomore Helen Raines finished with 13 points, four steals and three rebounds.
