Red Riders’ season comes to an end

FAIRMONT – The Weir girls basketball team raced to an early lead and matched No. 6 ranked Fairmont Senior blow for blow before fading late in a 63-44 loss in a West Virginia Class AA Semifinal at the Fairmont Armory.

“They couldn’t hardly miss in the first half,” said Fairmont Senior Coach Corey Cline. “We knew they didn’t come all that way to take a beaten, and they were beating on us in the first half.”

The Lady Riders (10-12) hot start garnered a 14-8 lead late in the first quarter before the Lady Polar Bears (16-5) regrouped to finish the opening frame on an 8-0 run to take a 16-14 advantage into the second quarter.

Weir kept coming in the second quarter, continuing its hot shooting and hustle play and battling to the half trailing 29-28.

“I was very impressed with them and their effort,” Cline said. “The little guard, (Alyssa) Shingle, was unbelievable. She scored, she drove and dished, she took the offense to her teammates, she was a handful on defense and on the boards. Her energy alone was hard to match, and her team was matching her pace.”

Shingle scored eight of her team-high 14 points in the first half and dished out five assists, grabbed seven rebounds and snared four steals for the game. Raegan Stead and Shelva Burns joined her in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively. Burns added seven rebounds. Maddie Dalrymple led the Red Riders with eight boards and three blocks.

The Lady Riders played at a frantic pace in the first half, but faded in the second half.

“In the first half, we made shots, played defense and rebounded,” said Weir head coach Bill Smith. “In the second half we just couldn’t match it. This game was played at furious pace and we just faded in the second half.”

Fairmont Senior outscored Weir 34-16 in the second half to win going away.

Weir had one more run, pulling within nine at 53-44 with three minutes to play before Fairmont finished on a 10-0 run.

Emily Stoller scored a game-high 17 points for Fairmont Senior, including going 7 for 7 from the charity stripe.
