Big Red smacks Potters

STEUBENVILLE – After two-and-a- half innings, the Steubenville baseball team trailed East Liverpool 1-0 Tuesday at Vaccaro Field.

A half inning later it was 11-1 Big Red.

The home team then added 10 more in the bottom of the fourth as they took just four and a half innings to dispatch the Potters, 21-1.

For the second time in two games Big Red received strong pitching and a goose egg in the error column while also getting the chance to give players off the bench some innings.

“I’m happy to see another zero on the last column on the scorecard,” said Big Red head coach Fred Heatherington. “More important, this game gave us an opportunity to get some guys in the game and mix up some positions.”

Matt Petrella and Joey Nation combined to hold the Potters to one run on one hit. Petrella picked up the win, striking out four over four frames, with Nation pitching a scoreless fifth, striking out three.

“It was only the second time on the field all year, and we’re so dog- goned young,” said East Liverpool head coach Bill Bailey. “We’ve got three freshmen, four sophomores, a junior and a senior so we’re young. We just need to be playing every day.

“Once we get that and get going we’ll be OK.”

Petrella helped his own cause at the plate with a double, two singles and four RBIs, with Pat Pizzoferrato and Justin Corsi each driving in three runs. Corsi matched Petrella with a double and two singles while Pizzoferrrato hit a triple. John Linn and Kai McClurg each drove in a pair of runs.

All 12 Big Red players to step in the batter’s box reached base and scored. Steubenville drew 13 walks as a unit while striking out just three times.

Parker Bowers drove in East Liverpool’s run on a second inning single.

Big Red (2-0) is in action again today when it visits Wheeling Park.
