Blue Dons, Red Riders split
WEIRTON – The Weirton Madonna tennis teams split its matches Wednesday at Starvaggi Park.
The girls earned a 7-0 win over rival Weir High and the boys dropped a 5-2 decision to strong Cambridge.
Three singles matches were won by 8-0 scores as Elizabeth Conforti defeated Emily Giordano, Ali Welch topped Ryleigh Glaspell and Morgan Duerr beat Bailey Tusick. Tina Conforti downed Ashley Anderson 8-1.
In doubles action, Welch and Tina Conforti netted an 8-2 win over Morgan Cassels and Mikayla Zias. Duerr and Elizabeth Conforti stopped Christine Robinson and Hannah Hinerman and Annie Frankovitch and Eva Bowser defeated Jasmine Wilson and Alexi Bruno by 8-0 counts.
For the boys, Madonna’s two wins came in singles play.
Nick Conforti nipped Cody Engstrom 7-5 in the tiebreaker for a 9-8 victory and Thomas Gianni downed Michael George 8-1.
Aaron Ruby topped Matt Conforti and Kamden Payton downed Dominic Clements by 8-3 scores.
In doubles play, Engstrom and Connor Engstrom slipped past Conforti and Conforti in the best match of the day, 8-6 in the tiebreaker for a 9-8 victory.
Zach Padden and Seth Rhodes downed Clements and Gianni 8-6.
Knights, Bears split
WHEELING – The Oak Glen tennis teams split with host Wheeling Central Wednesday.
The Maroon Knights earned a 7-0 boys win and the Golden Bears took a 6-1 girls victory.
Jonathan Haley topped Addison Sayre and Daniel Lee beat Nate Bennett by 8-2 scores and Brett Szeligo and Gus Schmidt downed Jake Beilhart and Evan Hall by 8-1 counts.
In doubles action, Haley and Szeligo beat Sayre and Beilhart and Ben Gordon and Billy Teufel downed Cullen Bennett and Christian White 8-1. Schmidt and Lee defeated Nate Bennett and Hall 8-5.
For the girls, Anna Crawford beat Nadine Metzger 8-1, Abbi Sayre topped Bianca Saporito 8-5 and Madison Juszczak defeated Maricris Pangilian 8-0.
Wheeling Central’s Joanna Capito downed Hayley Spurlock 8-2.
In doubles, Spurlock and Juszczak beat Capito and Metzger 8-4, Crawford and Sayrbe downed Saporito and Pangilinan 8-0 and Lauren Pizzurro and Madison Hill won by forfeit.
