Central girls, Big Red boys, Kamarec, Pollock lead relays

STEUBENVILLE – Steubenville and Steubenville Catholic Central won the team awards and Indian Creek’s Frank Kamarec and Edison’s Katelyn Pollock won the individual awards Saturday at the annual Jefferson County Relays at the Harding Track and Field Complex.

In weather more suited for the Early Bird – cold, windy and miserable – Big Red’s 172 points won the boys title and the Crusaders’ 168 the girls team crown. Edison was second in both divisions.

Kamarec won three events and took fourth in the high jump to score 34 points, setting a school record, breaking the old mark of 28 by Michael Smith.

Kamarec captured the three distance events – 800, 1600 and 3200. His 2:01.65 in the 800 was rather impressive.

Pollock’s 24 points was four better than Catholic Central’s Kate Wilson. Pollock won the 400, placed second in the high jump and third in the 800.

Wilson captured the 800 and 1600.

Catholic Central won eight of the 17 events – along with Wilson, Monica Rigaud (100 hurdles), Rachel Rigaud (shot put), Moriah Vosteen (high jump) and the 4×200, 4×400 and 4×800 relays.

Seniors Michaela Gotta and Taylor Zapolnik had strong meets for the Crusaders.

Catholic Central is slowly proving it will be a force to reckon with come Navarre.

Edison also received a win by Ashley Borsch in the 300 hurdles.

Indian Creek’s Brooke Goodrich won the long jump, Kristen Shimko the discus and Zoe Weaver the 3200.

Lysiah Rice won the 100 for Big Red and it captured the 4×100 and shuttle hurdle relays.

Toronto’s Mykia West triumphed in the 200.

The Steubenville boys grabbed 10 of the 17 events.

Along with victories in the 4×200, 4×400 and shuttle hurdle relays, Big Red’s wins also came from Robert Hayden (100), Ja’Quan Lavender (400), Joey Nodianis (110 hurdles, high jump), Michael Diaz (300 hurdles), Dashon Redman (shot put) and Garon Lytle (long jump).
