Dons sweep, Bears split on court

WEIRTON – The Madonna girls tennis team won three singles match and a doubles tiebreaker for a 4-3 victory over St. Clairsville Monday at Starvaggi Park.

The Blue Dons boys followed the win with a 5-2 triumph of their own.

Ali Welch and Tina Conforti defeated Paige Dennis and Samantha Hodgsen 7-4 in the tiebreaker for a 9-8 victory.

In singles, Amy Davis beat Dennis 8-3 and Welch topped Hodgsen and Conforti downed Danielle DeNoble by 8-4 scores.

St. Clairsville’s Katelin Gandee defeated Morgan Duerr 8-3.

DeNoble and Gandee beat Duerr and Elizabeth Conforti 8-2 and Alexa Clark and Kelly Strama downed Bailey Roberts and Emily Fournier 8-3.

Nick Conforti and Matt Conforti blanked Caden Myers and Chris Baker, 8-0, respectively, in singles play and then beat Myers and Austin Douglass 8-1 in doubles activity.

Madonna’s Thomas Gianni defeated Alexander Trouten 8-4. Gianni and Alan Alimario beat Baker and Trouten 8-2.

Douglass topped Alimario 8-3 and Chris Toohey and Daniel Trouten defeated Dominic Clements and Dustin Parr 8-6.

Oak Glen splits

WARWOOD – The Oak Glen tennis teams split with host Wheeling Central Monday.

The Lady Golden Bears won 6-1 and the boys dropped a 7-0 decision.

Oak Glen won three singles matches – Anna Crawford over Nadine Metzger 8-1, Abbi Sayre over Bianca Saporito 8-3 and Madison Juszczak over Maricris Pengilinan 8-0.

Wheeling Central’s Joanna Capito stopped Oak Glen’s Haley Spurlock 8-4.

In doubles, Spurlock and Juszczak beat Capito and Metzger 8-2 and Crawford and Sayre defeated Saporito and Pangilinan 8-0. Lauren Pizzurro and Madison Hill won by forfeit.

For the boys, Wheeling Central’s Jonathan Haley beat Addison Sayre, Brett Szeligo topped Jake Beilhart and Daniel Lee defeated Nate Bennett by 8-2 scores. Gus Schmidt beat Evan Hall 8-3.

All three doubles matches were 8-1 wins by the Maroon Knights.

Haley and Szeligo beat Sayre and Beilhart, Schmidt and Lee downed Hall and Bennett and Ben Gordon and Billy Teufel defeated Cullen Bennett and Derek Chamberlain.
