Panthers stop Martins Ferry

MARTINS FERRY – For the second time in three days, Buckeye Local has defeated Martins Ferry on the baseball diamond.

Buckeye Local’s Austin Marshall struck out a dozen in scattering five singles and issuing just one free pass in a 12-2 triumph Wednesday.

In addition, he drove in a run with a pair of singles and a triple as

“That’s two conference wins,” first-year Buckeye Local head coach Rick DeLuca said. “That’s a pretty good start.”

The Panthers rewarded Marshall by tallying eight times in the third inning when they sent 12 batters to the plate.

Shane Duncan highlighted the uprising with a two-run single, while Marshall singled and tripled in two at-bats in the frame. Buckeye Local took advantage of four base-on-balls and a trio of Martins Ferry errors in that inning alone.

“We don’t have any starting pitching right now,” Martins Ferry head coach Anthony Reasbeck said after watching four hurlers combine for a dozen walks. “If we don’t find some soon, there’s going to be a lot of night’s like this.”

Marshall whiffed eight of the first 10 Purple Riders he faced, including the side in the third.

With Marshall doing the work with his arm and bat, teammate Chase Hopkins joined in with three singles and a double from his leadoff spot.
