D3baseball.com selects Nogay as Regional Pitcher of Year
WASHINGTON, Pa. – D3baseball.com released its annual all-region teams and Washington & Jefferson College junior right-hander Eddie Nogay, a Weirton Madonna graduate, was chosen as the Mideast Region Pitcher of the Year.
In addition, Nogay earned a spot on the All-Mideast Region first team, joining classmate Josh Staniscia, the Presidents’ right fielder. Staniscia was also a first-team selection in 2012.
The Presidents’ Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year, Nogay capped a remarkable season on the mound with two victories at the NCAA Division III Mideast Regional in Terre Haute, Ind., to finish with a 12-1 record and a 3.01 earned-run average. The 12 victories smashed the school record and he also established another school record with 86 innings. He is tied for second in NCAA Division III this season in victories, behind only Linfield’s Chris Haddeland (13).
Nogay, who was voted to the NCAA Mideast Regional All-Tournament Team, totaled 70 strikeouts and held opponents to a .238 batting average. The Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District performer owns a 22-1 career record and has never lost one of his 27 career starts. His only career loss came in a relief performance this season.
Nogay has already logged 199 innings as a President (fourth in school history) and needs five victories to pass Sam Mann for the school’s career win lead. His 2.62 career ERA is also second behind Mann (2.21) in the W&J record book.
With 10 victories this spring, Nogay tied 11 other pitchers, including current Case Western Reserve Head Coach Matt Englander, for 25th place in NCAA Division III history.
The All-Region duo helped W&J post a 33-13 record, win the school’s ninth PAC Championship and earn a program-best, third-place at the Mideast Regional. The Presidents entered the eight-team tournament as the No. 5 seed and recorded victories over No. 3 Wooster, No. 4 Illinois Wesleyan and No. 6 Thomas More. The 33 victories rank fourth in school history.
