Indian Creek wins two close games

MINGO JUNCTION – Jonathan Woodbury drove in Dustin Rath in the sixth inning for the game-winning RBI as the Indian Creek baseball team nipped visiting Wheeling Park, 3-2, Tuesday at Muth Field.

The Patriots took a 2-0 lead off Redskins starter Cole Yeater in the top of the first inning on an RBI double by Mike Kowalo and an RBI single by Chalmer Moffett.

But, that was all that Yeater gave up.

Indian Creek scored single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings for their 13th win in 19 starts. It visits Carrollton today.

Woodbury also had another single. Alex Young singled twice and doubled and Zach Williams doubled for an RBI.

Creek wins marathon

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – The Indian Creek softball team scored three times in the bottom of the 12th inning for a 4-1 victory over host St. Clairsville on Tuesday.

The same teams meet today in Wintersville.

Paige DeMattio blasted a two-run homer and Megan Markja added an RBI single in the winning inning. Alexis Monroe had an RBI single in the third. Abby Orr collected three singles and Bethany Davis a single and double. Brey Mays doubled.

Paige Geanangel earned the win with 14 strikeouts. She delivered a strike out in the bottom of the ninth to end the inning as the Red Devils had bases loaded.

“Both teams played well,” said Redskins coach Angie Penner. “Our girls played like champions.”

Irish defeat Big Red

BELLAIRE – The St. John Central softball team totaled 14 hits in Tuesday’s 9-1 win over visiting Steubenville.

Big Red’s run came on Mallory Giannamore’s solo shot in the seventh inning.

St. John Central pitcher Hannah Absalom fanned 16 and walked none.

Big Red tennis sweeps Red Riders

STEUBENVILLE – The Steubenville tennis teams swept visiting Weir High Tuesday at Belleview Park, 4-3 (girls) and 5-2.

In the girls match, Big Red’s Annie Nehrbas beat Lex Bruno, 8-0, and Aspen Bradley defeated Ryliegh Glaspell 8-3. In doubles, Nehrbas and Bradley stopped Makayla Lous and Morgan Cassell 8-3 and Maria Roscoe and Amanda Roscoe downed Christine Robinson and Hannah Hinerman, 8-3.

Weir won its three matches via forfeit.

For the boys, Steubenville swept the singles matches.

Stefano Lanni defeated Stephan White 8-3, Michael Rosachi downed Tyler Conrad 8-0, Jorge Dominguez beat Brendan Wade 8-4 and Charlie Keenan stopped Matt Tenaglio 8-5.

In doubles, Big Red’s Anthony Craig and Mark Cole defeated Steven Maragos and Matt Barnes 8-3. Weir’s Steven White and Chad Hensley beat Michael Rosachi and Lanni 8-3 and Tenaglio and Conrad downed Blake Mullen and Kesaun Asutin 8-4.

Big Red hosts Indian Creek today at Belleview.
