Madonna beats Weir for city title
WEIRTON – The Madonna baseball team has dominated the annual City Championship with Weir High for the past four years, and they dominated the Red Riders again Thursday, making it five in a row at Ed Bowman Field with a 10-0 five-inning victory.
The Blue Dons scored seven runs in the first inning to virtually put the game away for winning pitcher and senior Tory Fuscardo, who hurled a nifty two-hitter through five.
It was the last home game for the Blue Dons in 2013 and Fuscardo and Charlie Kotten were the only two seniors honored prior to the game.
Fuscardo gave up two singles while striking out five and walking two.
“Our seniors stepped up for us tonight,” said victorious coach T.J. Brancazio. “Tory (Fuscardo) pitched another gem and Kotten, who has not seen much action this season, got the start at first base, delivering an RBI single and played flawless defensively.
“Then (Mike) Rogers and (Will) Bowers got those first- inning triples and it just seemed to snowball from there.
“But, we have been hitting the ball well in the past three games even though we lost a couple of them, and our defense has been solid.”
Brancazio pointed out that it was a good time for that to happen as the Blue Dons play Bishop Donahue today at 5 p.m. at Toronto for the OVAC 1A championship and then open sectional play next Monday.
Rogers set the tone when he led off the game with a line- drive triple down the right field line. Kaleb Baire followed with a walk and when Luca Fuscardo bounced into a fielder’s choice as Rogers raced home.
Will Bowser tripled Fuscardo home and Nick Ossman followed with a single to drive in Bowser.
Weir High starting pitcher Mitch Viakley obviously was struggling as he walked the next two batters, Kotten and Vinnie Merico, to load the bases. Sophomore catcher Dom Silvestri bounced one to Red Rider senior third baseman Matt Cessna, who threw home to nail Ossman on a force out.
Tory Fuscardo singled to left field to plate Merico and Anthony Antinone, the courtesy runner for Silvestri. One out later, Baire, batting for the second time in the inning, singled to center field to score Fuscardo.
The Blue Dons tacked on a run in the second and two more in the third for the win.
Fuscardo scattered the two hits, one to Ryan Duke in the third inning and another to Cole Davidson in the fifth, while striking out five and walking two.
The Red Riders made a run at extending the game beyond five innings when they got the bases loaded with one out in the top of the fifth inning. Chris Russell was hit by a Fuscardo pitch and went to third on Davidson’s single to left field. Jake Wypasek walked to fill the sacks, but Fuscardo nailed it down with a pop fly to shortstop and a hard liner to right field by Jeremy Swartzmiller.
“They were the better team tonight,” said Red Rider coach, Bob Rosnick. “They came to play and we didn’t. All the credit goes out to them. They wanted to win.”
The Red Riders (9-11) host Indian Creek at Bowman Field today and they will host sectional play next Wednesday against Oak Glen.
