Madonna soccer to hold meeting

WEIRTON – A parent/player meeting will be held for the Madonna High School girls soccer team at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the school cafeteria for those interested in playing for the 2013 squad.

Bears to hold volleyball camp

NEW MANCHESTER – The Oak Glen Volleyball Camp, facilitated by the Fairmont University coaching staff, will be held June 10-12 at the high school.

The cost is $100 per person and each person will receive a T-shirt.

The camp will be held from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from noon to 3 p.m. All players should bring a light lunch to eat between sessions. All grades will meet at the same time.

Deadline is June 1.

Junior golf to start

UNIONPORT – A junior golf program will start at Red Oaks Golf Course on Wednesday. The six-week program will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. each Wednesday. The cost is $35.

Tigers to hold registration

STEUBENVILLE – The Steubenville Tigers football team will hold registration for players ages 6-13 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 18 at Kroger’s on Hollywood Blvd.

Boosters club to hold meeting

STEUBENVILLE – The Big Red Boosters Club will meet at the high school conference room at 6 p.m. Monday. Night of the Races has been set for June 22 at the Spot Bar.

Golf tournament open to sign-ups

SALT FORK – The annual Salt Fork Junior Invitational will be held July at Salt Fork State Park Golf Course with a 10 a.m. shotgun. The cost is $30 per person ($20 for those with Salt Fork golf memberships).

Awards will go to the top three finishers in the boys divisions (17-18, 15-16, 13-14) and top two in girls divisions (16-18, 13-15).

Wildcats beat Huskies

RICHMOND – The Edison softball team slipped past Harrison Central, 2-1, Friday.

Zoe Westfall was the winning pitcher, striking out six over seven innnings of work. Molly McCoy scored both runs for the Wildcats. The first came in the fourth when she led off with a single, took second on a passed ball, stole third, and scored on a passed ball.

She scored the easy way with the game tied 1-1 in the bottom sixth on a round tripper for the eventual game-winning run. Kayli Stewart had a single as well.

Katie Ellzy pitcehd a gem despite the loss. She struck out nine and surrendered just three hits. Ellzy drove in the Huskies lone run with a sixth inning single. Ronnie Caldwell had a pair of singles with Kara Dunfee and Kiley Staley each adding a double.

Edison hosts Martins Ferry today while Harrison Central heads to Steubenville Catholic Central Monday.

Crusaders fall to Tigers

STEUBENVILLE – The Steubenville Catholic Central softball team fell 7-4 to Shadyside on senior night.

The Crusaders’ Taylor Clark continued to impress with the bat as she plays through injury, connecting for a two-run home run, a double, and a single.

Alex McComb had a pair of singles and an RBI with Sammi Giannamore, Megan Lloyd, Maddy Gulan, and Kelsey Grandinetti each adding a single.

The Crusaders (18-4) hosts Harrison Central Monday.

Edison tops Red Devils

RICHMOND – The Edison baseball team defeated St. Clairsville 10-3 Friday to win the Buckeye 8 championship.

Brian Straka drove in four runs on a pair of doubles while Storm Allese connected for a single, double, and three RBIs. Nolan Marcus had three hits and an RBI with Josh Pasek adding two a pair of singles and winning pitcher Alec Jones having a single and a double.

Edison (16-3) is at Vaccaro Field today at 1:30 p.m. to take on Cambridge for the OVAC Class 5A title.

Panthers down Jets

MORRISTOWN – The Buckeye Local baseball team defeated Union Local 15-9 Friday.

Jonathan Borkoski swung the big bat for the Panthers, smacking two home runs and connecting for two base hits to go with six RBIs.

Winning pitcher Chase Hopskins had a triple and two singles, Eric Banal had a double and two singles, and Josh Sokolowski added a double and a single.

Pancake breakfast set

STEUBENVILLE – The Bishop John King Mussio Junior Crusaders will hold a pancake breakfast from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. today at Applebee’s.

Cost is $5 per person.

STEUBENVILLE – The Big Red Boosters Club will meet at 6 p.m. Monday at the high school conference room. Memberships are available.

Soccer team to hold dinner

RICHMOND – The Edison High School boy’s soccer team will host its second-annual sphaghetti dinner at the high school from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.

The high school choir will perform their spring concert following the dinner in the auditorium. The dinner includes: pasta, salad, bread, desert and a drink.

A $7 donation is asked. Take-out is available.

Sakara records an ace

WEIRTON – Dick Sakara recorded a hole-in-one at Williams Country Club. He used a 6-iron on teh 140-yard par 3 12th hole. The shot was witnessed by Russ Wickham, Joe Stein and Bob Hoffmaster.
