Big Red tops Potters in 5

EAST LIVERPOOL – The Steubenville Big Red volleyball team didn’t take long to play a tough match.

Big Red visited and defeated East Liverpool 23-25, 25-20, 16-25, 27-25, 15-12 to open the season Monday.

Steubenville will host Meadowbrook at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Mytia Barker led the way for Big Red with 29 points, 12 kills and 10 digs. Abby Taylor added six kills, 14 digs, 25 assists and 14 points and Taylor Young 10 kills, 12 assists and 15 points.

Annie Nehrbas contributed 10 kills, four blocks and 15 points; Brittany Bodo six kills, four digs and 12 points; Lysiah Rice two kills and two blocks and Carmie Biasi 19 digs and 11 points.

Crusaders are 2-0

STEUBENVILLE – Catholic Central swept visiting Beallsville Monday 25-7, 25-5, 25-19 to start the season 2-0. The Crusaders visit Edison at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Setter Robyn Runkel paced the win with 20 assists and 12 points. Madeline Gulan totaled 10 kills and three blocks and Monica Rigaud eight kills and two blocks.

Kami Bellardine added 22 points and six aces and Monica Fischer 17 points and four kills.

Huskies win at home

CADIZ – Austin Kowalski shot 41 to grab medalist honors as the Harrison Central golf team beat Indian Creek, 183-203, Monday at Cadiz Country Club.

Bryce Walrath carded a 45, Matt Hawthorne 48 and Jarett Edwards 49 for the Huskies.

Aaron Foldi shot 49 to lead the Redskins. Adam Freshwater shot 50 and Justin Dailey and Cody Hopkins each had 52.

Austin Paul-Orrechio led Weir High with his 55. Tyler Warrick shot 65 and Joe Paterson 69.

Miller goes low for Blue Devils

HOOKSTOWN, Pa. – Owen Miller fired a 4-under 31 to lead the Burgettstown golf team to a 190-240 victory over Bishop Canevin on Monday.

Hunter Lecker carded a 36, Cody Dobbin 39, Michael Couch 41 and Austin Lis 43 for the Blue Devils.

Sam Smallhoover shot 42 to lead Bishop Canevin. Brandon Shaughnessy shot 45, Joey Kretz 48, Lane Adams 51 and Kaden Kelly 54.

Big Red drops Potters

STEUBENVILLE – The Big red boys soccer team opened the season with a 2-0 victory over visiting East Liverpool Monday at Harding Stadium.

Jorge Dominguez and Dominic DiCarlo scored and assisted on each other’s goals for Big Red. John Paul Duff saved two shots on a quiet night.

Shane Talbott finished with 14 saves for the Potters.

Big Red visits Edison at 5 p.m. on Aug. 27.
