Red Devils claim 18-hole Buckeye 8 lead

CADIZ – St. Clairsville is holding an 18-stroke lead over Harrison Central after the first round of the 2013 Buckeye 8 Golf Championships thanks, in large part to senior Seth Vannoy, who posted the low score of the day.

The all-district player paced all players in the tournament Friday, posting a 1-over 73 at Cadiz Country Club.

Vannoy began his round in a morning rain shower and once again was dodging rain drops as he began play on the back 9.

“I three-putted the one hole, but other than that it was a good day,” Vannoy said.

Also for the Red Devils, Nathan Teater’s shot 83, Dalton Showalter’s 84 and Michael Eaton’s 93. It resulted in a 333 score. Harrison Central is at 351.

Junior Austin Kowalski signed the second-best card with a 79 to pace Harrison Central.

Ian Saho came soaring up out of the No. 5 spot on the roster finishing with an 86 for the Huskies, while Bryce Walraith shot an 88 and Jarrett Edwards a 98 to round out the scoring for Harrison Central.

Union Local is currently third in the team standings at 366. Tristan Bruce led the Jets with the third-best round of the day, shooting an 82. Jarrett Causby shot an 85 for the Jets, which tied him with Martins Ferry’s Joel Shane. Shane shot an 85, but was the only Purple Rider to finish in double digits.

Edison Local’s Jimmy Marsh shot an 83 to match Teater’s total and tie for fourth. Showalter was sixth overall in individual scoring.

Causby and Shane are tied for seventh, while Saho is sitting in ninth and both Walrath and Indian Creek’s Aaron Foldi posted an 88 to round out the top 11 on the links.

In team scoring, Edison finished fourth with 377, followed by Indian Creek with 388, Martins Ferry right behind with 390 and Buckeye Local in seventh with 404. Bellaire is not fielding a golf team this season.

St. Clairsville will try to defend its league title on Sept. 6 at at Belmont Hills Country Club for the second round.

Team champions, as well as first- and second-team all-Buckeye 8, will be crowned following completion of the second round.
