Central’s golf season ends

WEST LAFAYETTE – The golf season came to a close for Steubenville Catholic Central on Wednesday at the Division III regionals at River Greens Golf Course.

The Crusaders shot 338, falling short of qualifying for the state tournament by four strokes.

Central was led by Austin Meronoff with a 76, who fell short by one stroke for qualifying as an individual; Josh Merriman with 86; Mike Manfresca 88; Nick Ivkovich 88 and Jason Bensur with 95.

“We played our practice round on Sunday and scored 327, and I told the kids that I didn’t think that was good enough to qualify, turns out it was, so I think we went in to the district pressing to shoot lower,” said Central coach Rocky Augustine.

“We will graduate three seniors, Mike Manfresca, Josh Merriman and Jason Bensur all outstanding individuals and students and I will miss all of them. Our program is getting bigger and we have some good young kids who can step in next year, so our goals will remain the same.

“We will take some time off then get back to work this winter to prepare for next fall.”

The Crusaders finished the season 65-21.
