Blue Dons seeking help

WEIRTON?- The Weirton Madonna football program is seeking help to clear the football field at Jimmy Carey Stadium.

Volunteers are asked to bring plastic shovels or push brooms at 8 a.m. Friday. Metal shovels are prohibited.

The Blue Dons play Williamstown at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the West Virginia Class A state semifinals.

West Liberty Still No. 2 in poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The unbeaten West Liberty University men’s basketball team is No. 2 for the second consecutive week in the National Association of Basketball Coaches latest NCAA Division II Top 25 poll, released Tuesday afternoon.

The poll includes games played through Sunday.

Metro State, Colo. (2-0), which beat West Liberty in last year’s national semifinals, once again received 14 of the 16 first-place votes to stay locked in at No. 1. The Roadrunners stepped out of NCAA Division II play this week and are playing exhibition games against NCAA Division I teams in the NIT Season Tipoff Tournament.

Coach Jim Crutchfield’s Hilltoppers, who moved to 5-0 on the season with Monday’s 128-69 dismantling of West Virginia State, are once again leading the nation in scoring at 113.0 points per game.

West Liberty will be idle over the Thanksgiving holiday before returning to action on Dec. 5 with a road game at Notre Dame of Ohio.

Big Red selling tickets

STEUBENVILLE – Tickets for Steubenville Big Red’s Division IV state semifinal playoff game at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Cardinal Mooney at Canton’s Fawcett Stadium will be on sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Big Red ticket office.

There is no school Thursday and Friday.

The cost is $8. All tickets are $10 at the gate. The school will receive a portion of the presale tickets only.

Big Red boosters to meet

STEUBENVILLE – The Steubenville Big Red Boosters Club will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Harding Stadium Fieldhouse.

The boosters club will sponsor a bus to Friday’s playoff game. It is a non-smoking and non-alcohol bus. Seats are $30 which includes a ticket. The bus will leave Harding School parking lot at 4:45 p.m. Seats are on a first-come basis.

Weir to host celebrity server

WEIRTON – The Weir Basketball Boosters will host a celebrity server night at Undo’s on Three Springs Drive from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

A portion of the proceeds from meals and tips will benefit the Weir Basketball Boosters as they work to fulfill their mission of making each player look and feel like a champion.

Every diner makes a difference and the celebrity server night is a great opportunity to meet the 2013-14 Red Riders, Lady Red Riders and their coaches.

STEUBENVILLE – The Steubenville Big Red football and cheerleader parents will meet at 7:30 p.m. Sunday in the Harding Middle School cafeteria. The football banquet will be discussed.

Jesuit sweeps WVSU in quarters

WHEELING – Top-seeded Wheeling Jesuit rolled to a 3-0 victory (25-7, 25-7, 25-16) on Wednesday night in the Mountain East Conference volleyball quarterfinals.

Emma Shleucher led the Cardinals (32-5) with eight kills. Andrea Throbe dished out 27 assists as WJU posted a .408 hitting percentage.

AnneElise Albrecht had a team-high six kills to leads the Yellow Jackets (11-17).

Wheeling Jesuit will take on Shepherd today at 7:30 p.m. at the McDonough Center.

Barons get first win

WASHINGTON, Pa. – The Franciscan University of Steubenville men’s basketball team captured its first win in two years, 88-64, Sunday over Penn State-Greater Allegheny in the Farmers Insurance Tip-Off Classic at Washington and Jefferson.

Timmy Schenk led the way with a game-high 20 points, 17 of them coming in the first half.

“We’ve got to keep getting better each and every day,” said head coach John Lamanna said. “We really don’t talk about last year or the previous year. We are a totally different squad and we have our own goals that we are working toward.”

Sophomore point guard Derrick David had 13 assists, eight points and four steals.

Junior forward Joe Rine picked up where he left off last season, getting his first double-double of the year with 14 points, 13 rebounds and four bocks.

The Barons will host Waynesburg at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Basketball club seeks players

MOUNDSVILLE – The Marshall County Girls Basketball Club is seeking a few additional players for its fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade teams for the 2014 spring season.

Players from Marshall County and the surrounding counties in West Virginia and Ohio are eligible to participate.

Madonna’s Comis earns honor

WEIRTON – Weirton Madonna senior quarterback Ross Comis has been selected as the Student Sports Eastern Region Player of the Week for his performance in a 35-6 win over Clay-Battelle.

The 6-foot, 175-pound senior quarterback-safety accounted for 430 total yards on offense and three touchdowns as the state’s No. 1 ranked Class A team finished the regular season at 10-0.

Comis had 312 yards in he first half as Madonna roared to a 28-0 cushion at intermission. He ended with 254 rushing yards and a 3-yard score on 21 carries and completed 10 of 14 passes for 176 yards and two touchdowns of 30 (Marcello Biondillo) and 73 yards (Will Bowser). He also had an interception on defense, where he has started four years.

As a three-year standout at quarterback, Comis is one of the leading contender for the Kennedy Award given to the state’s Player of the Year.

Force to hold tryouts

WEIRTON – The Force Soccer Club will host spring tryouts Sunday at the J.C. Williams Soccer Complex. Girls will begin at 1 p.m. and the boys at 2:30 p.m. Registration is online at www.npysaforce.org. Registration must be complete prior to tryouts.

Travel teams forming in the spring are: high school boys and girls (two or three teams each) and there may be a few openings for the younger teams as well – U10B, U12B, U12G, U13B, U14B, U14G.

Crusaders selling tickets

STEUBENVILLE – Pre-sale reserved seats for Catholic Central’s Division VII home playoff game against Racine Southern will be on sale for season ticket holders only from 9 a.m. to noon and 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to noon Wednesday in the school cafeteria.

Non-season ticket holders can purchase reserved seats on Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon in the cafeteria. All pre-sale tickets are $7. A portion of the pre-sale comes back to the school.

All tickets sold at the gate for Saturday’s contest will be general admission only. All tickets are $9 on game night.
