NEW PHILADELPHIA – The Steubenville Catholic Central girls basketball team allowed host Tusky Central Catholic just three points in the fourth quarter in a 37-27 win Saturday afternoon in the opener for both teams.

Lauren Hunt scored nine, Miranda Parkinson seven and Brittany Bertoia six for the Crusaders, who visit Bridgeport on Monday.

Weir to host celebrity server

WEIRTON – The Weir Basketball Boosters will host a celebrity server night at Undo’s on Three Springs Drive from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday.

A portion of the proceeds from meals and tips will benefit the Weir Basketball Boosters as they work to fulfill their mission of making each player look and feel like a champion.

Every diner makes a difference and the celebrity server night is a great opportunity to meet the 2013-14 Red Riders, Lady Red Riders and their coaches.

WBA meeting to be held

WINTERSVILLE – The Wintersville Baseball Association will hold a meeting at 6p.m. Dec. 10 at Zalenski’s. Topics will include Bethany Clinic dates, draft, player evaluations and registration costs. Anyone with children in the association is welcome to attend.

Big Red selling tickets

STEUBENVILLE – Tickets for Steubenville Big Red’s Division IV state semifinal playoff game at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Cardinal Mooney at a site to be determined today will be on sale from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Big Red ticket office.

There is no school Thursday and Friday.

The cost is $7. All tickets are $9 at the gate. The school will receive a portion of the presale tickets only.

FOLLANSBEE – Follansbee Youth Basketball League sign-ups will be held for Brooke County residents only at the Follansbee Middle School Fieldhouse from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday. All players must register even if they played last year. Cost is $35 per player, or $55 per family.

Nagy records an ace

CHESTER – Alex Nagy recorded a hole-in-one at Mountaineer Woodview Golf Course. He used an 8-iron on the 140-yard par 3 17th hole. Don Reese, Gary Cameron and Jim Williams witnessed the shot.

BLOOMINGDALE – The Jefferson County Sportsman’s Club will hold its annual turkey shoot at 11 a.m. today. Events will include trap shoots and luck shoots. Beginners are welcome and the public is invited.

FUS runners fare well

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Franciscan University of Steubenville cross country teams placed second (women) and third (men) at the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Championships Saturday.

“This is exactly where we wanted to be,” Kuebler said. “I am very proud of our runners and their ability to take on such a tough course.”

Junior Allison Huelseman placed ninth in 25:16 on the 6K route. Senior Molly Chambers was 10th seven seconds behind her teammate and d sophomore Colene Smith was 11th in 25:25. All three secured spots on the All-Conference team.

For the men, Patrick Flanagan placed fifth in his personal best of 26:55 for the 8K.

David Byers took 19th in 28:16.

FUS volleyball wins

HAMBURG, N.Y. – The Franciscan University of Steubenville volleyball defeated host Hilbert College 20-25, 25-23, 18-25, 25-20, 15-13 Saturday.

The Lady Barons own the No. 2 seed in conference postseason action and will play Saturday.
