Big Red stumbles early on the mat

STEUBENVILLE – Big Red’s stay in the Ohio Division II dual wrestling tournament came to a surprisingly quick end Wednesday.

River View, the No. 6 seed, swept the final four matches and clipped third-seeded Big Red, 35-33, in the opening round of the Region 13 quarterfinals at the Joseph Stern Gymnasium.

Carrollton, which demolished Indian Valley 74-6, advanced to next week’s semifinals by whipping the Black Bears 60-14. The Warriors earned the region’s second seed (powerful Claymont is number one).

“You can’t take anything away from River View, they wrestled well,” said Big Red coach Mike Blackburn. “They’re a really solid team and they matched up real well with us.

“It’s my fault, we didn’t wrestle like we were ready for sure after a long weekend. We definitely made some young mistakes.”

Over the weekend, Big Red repeated as OVAC Class 4A champions and finished third overall in the annual conference tournament behind Parkersburg South and Wheeling Park.

Big Red freshman Thaddeus Martineau won by forfeit at 113 then sophomore Tariq Wilson pinned River View’s Tyler Koch in 4:41. Wilson earned the 113 championship at the OVAC event. Dakotah Goff recorded a technical fall over Ki Wright at 126 to increase Big Red’s early lead.

River View registered victories at 132 and 138 before Big Red sophomore Shawn Livingston scored a technical fall at 145. Sophomore Niko Moray also was a winner by technical fall at 152.

After a River View win at 160, Big Red junior Brandon Jones got a forfeit victory at 170.

From there, the Bears pocketed two pins, a major decision and a decision to earn the team win.

“Mat awareness, knowing what’s going on, was a real problem for us,” Blackburn said. “It wasn’t just the last four matches. Even the guys who won by technical fallif we get falls there, things could have been different.

“Every point is important in a dual. The mistakes we made tonight are correctible. We just didn’t wrestle very well. We’re young (Big Red does not have a senior in the lineup) but these guys are veterans now. We’re past mid-season and there are no more growing pains. We should be able to take on anything that happens.”

Big Red is now 14-8 in dual matches and will participate in next week’s OVAC dual tournament.
