Huskies cruise to win

BELLAIRE – The Harrison Central girls basketball team cruised to a 71-42 win at Bellaire on Monday.

“We came down here expecting a dog fight,” said Harrison Central head coach Nick Yourkovich. “That really never materialized and I think that is due to how we came out and played offensively.”

Initially it looked like the Huskies coach was correct in his expectations as the Big Reds took an early lead and then traded blows through the first half of the opening frame. It was tied at 12 when the wheels fell off Bellaire’s game.

“It all started because we refused to talk to each other and nobody knew who they were guarding and that was when they started their run,” lamented Bellaire head coach Marci Quirk.

The Huskies went on a 13-0 run to finish the first quarter with a 25-12 lead.

“We have done this the last three games, we don’t have our match-ups,” Quirk continued. “I don’t understand it. We are a veteran team, we should know who we are guarding. There is no excuse for that.”

Offensively the Big Reds struggled against the Huskies defense as the run continued until the 4:01 mark in the second period. The damage was done as Bellaire trailed 32-14 after the 20-2 run by Harrison Central.

“We shot the ball well early, got our legs under us, then defensively we started limiting them to one shot. Once we cleaned up the boards we started running a little bit,” Yourkovich assessed. “I don’t know what we shot in the first half but from over here it looked like anything we threw up was going in.

“I’ve said it all year,” Yourkovich added. “If we shoot the ball well, we are awfully tough to beat.”

Katie Ellzy led the Huskies with a double-double, netting a game-high 24 points with 15 rebounds. Jesse Ledger added 13 points including three treys. D.J. Keesey dropped in 12 points and Shianne Nameth rounded out double figures with 10 points.

Harrison Central ruled the boards with 40 rebounds.

Kidder would be the only member of the Lady Big Reds in double digits with 10 points.

Both teams will return to the court Thursday night to honor their seniors. Bellaire will host Buckeye Local while the Huskies will take on Shadyside in a varsity only contest at 6 p.m.
