State-ranked Bridgeport girls run past Buckeye Local
BRIDGEPORT – State-ranked Bridgeport ran its record to 16-0 in girls’ high school basketball action with a convincing 89-32 victory against Buckeye Local on Saturday afternoon inside the John J. Havlicek Gymnasium.
This one was never in doubt as the Lady Bulldogs led by 30-3 after the first frame.
“I thought we shot the ball very well today,” Bridgeport head coach Rob Zitzelsberger allowed. “We came out with intensity.”
The effort continued through the second frame as the stingy Lady Bulldogs’ defense allowed just two 3-point goals in the period to take a commanding 53-9 lead into intermission.
“We took another step towards our goal today,” Zitzelsberger added.
At the other end of the scorer’s table and the lopsided scoreboard was Lady Panthers’ head coach Tom Figurski.
“Bridgeport is a great team,” Figurski commented. “You don’t get many opportunities to play against quality teams, and I feel this will give our young players something to aspire to.”
Senior Maclaine Murad led Bridgeport with 21 points, while pulling down eight rebounds. Classmate Nicole Smolenak notched a double-double with 19 points and 10 steals. She also had five assists.
Junior Briana Massey added 11 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for her own double-double. Sophomore Caitlyn Kroll added 15 points, nine assists, eight rebounds and seven steals, while Amber Millard chipped in 11 points for the Lady Bulldogs.
Bridgeport made good on 38 of 72 from the floor and 7 of 11 from the penalty stripe.
Buckeye Local was paced by Lauren Swiger with 11 points. Becky Zeroski added seven points.
The Lady Bulldogs will host St. Clairsville Monday night while the Panthers will travel to Martins Ferry for a varsity only contest at 7 p.m.
