FUS tennis rolls again; lacrosse teams defeated

From staff reports

ALTOONA, Pa.- The Franciscan University men’s tennis team was in control of its match against conference opponent Mount Aloysius College from start to finish, sweeping the Mounties with a 9-0 victory.

“Today was pretty quick,” head coach Jeremy Ellis said. “They played well and really had to stay mentally tough and they did.”

Both No. 1 doubles, Paul Jarzynka and Zachary Quiza, and No. 2 doubles, Luke Merry and David Freytag, shut out their opponents with 8-0 wins. No. 3 doubles, Joseph Staniszewski and Robert Butcher, also came out on top winning 8-1.

“It was a good match for us today,” senior team captain Jarzynka said. “We really went in there and played well. I think the thing is to focus from game to game on different things to work on.”

BETHANY – Franciscan University women’s lacrosse team lost 17-2 in a disappointing away match against Capital University.

“I don’t even know what went on out there,” head coach Maura Conant said. “We had been playing well this week. We had a tough game against Medaille but we were bouncing back.”

Lauren Noce notched the only two goals for the Barons, who next host St. Vincent College on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

Men’s lacrosse beaten

BETHANY – After a strong start, the Fransican men’s lacrosse team was beaten 20-8 by Capital University on Saturday. The Barons tallied one of their highest scoring games of the season, led by freshman midfielder/attackman Joseph Francis who had the first two goals of his career.

“We were competitive today,” head coach Pete Rosaschi said. “There were some moments where if we cut down on the mistakes we could play with these guys. We just had too many mental mistakes and had way too many penalties which put too much stress on the defense.”

Francis is one of thirteen players on the roster who have never played lacrosse before the season started.

“Joe Francis is new to the game and it was awesome to see him score,” Rosaschi said. “Guys like him are coming out, they’re learning the game and getting out there, that’s the most important thing.”

The Barons play at Thiel College at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Track fares well

MARIETTA – The Barons endured constant rain and cold temperatures, showing their resiliency in the slow conditions at the Don Frail Invitational hosted by Marietta College on Saturday.

“In this sport you’re running against the clock all the time, you’re throwing against the tape all the time, and you’re jumping against the length all the time,” head coach Vince Oliver. “From that standpoint it was an average day but in terms of virtue, we couldn’t have had a more successful day.”

Junior Elena Luke who became the first Franciscan athlete to win a long jump event, setting a personal and school record in the process with a jump of 4.65 meters.

“Elena is getting comfortable with herself, she’s getting confidence in herself, and she’s starting to blossom,” Oliver said. “I think she would have done even better than that distance if the conditions weren’t what they were.”

Sophomore James Marra set a personal record in the 800 and junior Katherine Molidor set a PR in the 1500.

The next meet for FUS is Saturday at Bethany College.
