Good start to the track season at annual Early Bird

STEUBENVILLE – The annual Early Bird Invitational was held Saturday at the Harding Stadium Track and Field Complex and some solid marks were registered before the rains hit.

The Wheeling Park girls totaled 117 points to take the team title, 29 points ahead of host Steubenville and 33 in front of Oak Glen.

Cleveland Glenville grabbed the boys crown with 128 points. The Patriots were second with 85 points, Oak Glen third (73), Steubenville Catholic Central fourth (66) and Big Red fifth (62).

Steubenville sophomore Elise Watts captured the high-point totals on the girls side. She won the long jump (16-2) and 100 hurdles (15.9) and was a member of the 4×100 (53.6) and 4×200 (1:54.3) relay teams that finished second.

Oak Glen senior Kelsey Chambers had solid runs in winning the 1600 (5:41.7) and 3200 (12:07.8) and teamed with Alex Arnott, Christen Mangano and Felicity Nolder to win the 4×800 relay in 10:47.3.

Indian Creek senior Kristen Shimko set a personal and school record with her winning 116-2 toss in the discus.

Catholic Central senior Moriah Vosteen captured the high jump at 5-0. Molly Morrow, Monica Rigaud, Taylor Bednar and Kara Kakascik won the 4×400 in 4:29.0.

Brooke freshman Amy Rine won the shot put at 32-11.

For the boys, Glenville took first in half of the 16 events.

Brooke’s Antonio Pizzuti captured the 1600 (4:49.1) and took second in the 3200 (10:42.4).

Oak Glen’s Micah Swiger, the defending West Virginia Class AA state champ in the long jump, won the event with a leap of 18-9. He partnered with Chris Bailey, David Campbell and Dakota Price to take second in the 4×100 in 45.0.

Catholic Central seniors Logan Hunt, Isaac Sanford, Mike Crosby and Anthony Lee grabbed the win in the 4×800 in 8:42.7.

Steubenville’s Ja’Quan Lavender ran 22.5 in the 200 and was nipped at the line by Glenville’s Davon Anderson, who won the high-point total for the boys.
