Oak Glen tops Weir
NEW MANCHESTER – The Oak Glen boys basketball team waltzed to an easy 74-38 win over visiting Weir High Saturday night as the West Virginia Class AA Region 1, Section 1 tournament began.
The prize for the Golden Bears is a trip to No. 1 seed Fairmont Senior (10-9) at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in the Armory Fieldhouse.
“Our guys underneath did a good job tonight and we shot well,” Oak Glen head coach Dave Smith said. “We got everyone involved tonight, we had a good effort from everyone.”
Senior Jacob Ford hit a trio of treys as the Bears held a 27-13 lead after eight minutes.
It wasn’t much better for the Red Riders in the second quarter as they were held to four points and went into the break, down 43-17.
“We just need a smooth third quarter. Stay focused and keep doing what we’re doing,” Smith said.
That happened with an 11-7 quarter.
“It’s been a tough year for these young kids, but they hung in there the whole time,” said veteran Weir High mentor Mike Granato after a 1-20 campaign. “We’re very young, we play quite a few freshmen and they gave it a real good effort. We need to work at it this summer and not just pick up the basketball in November.”
Oak Glen (4-19) saw 11 players in the scoring column. Freshman Noah Feicht led the way with 11. Bub Haddox and Tyler Click each had 10. Ford and Kyle Woodruff each added nine.
Chris Wood and Ethan Gilbert each had nine points for the Red Riders. Cory Enrietti added eight.
