Big Red opens year with win over Potters
STEUBENVILLE – Although a day later than planned after a Saturday rain out, the Steubenville baseball team went live Tuesday with a 10-0, five-inning victory over visiting East Liverpool at Vaccaro Field.
The scheduled opener with Indian Creek has been moved to a 5 p.m. start on Good Friday and the slated home game with John Marshall on Monday wasn’t played after the Monarchs did not have Big Red on their schedule.
“It’s good to get on the field,” said veteran Big Red mentor Fred Heatherington. “Yesterday gave us an extra day of practice on the field. We got four good practices in on the field and we were ready to play today.”
Big Red scored twice in the top of the first after Bryan Pierro walked, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Dmitri Collaros single. Collaros later scored on Anthony Zorne’s groundout.
Steubenville plated two in the third with two outs.
Winning pitcher Justin Corsi singled and that was followed by a Zorne single, Devin Ferguson single and bases loaded walks to Kai McClurg and Branden Jones.
Pierro singled to begin the fourth and came home on a Paul DeFrances groundout.
Big Red sent 10 to the dish in the bottom of the fifth.
“We played well today as a team,” said Heatherington. “We played well in the field. We made the plays we had to make. We got nine hits and 10 runs and Justin threw strikes and you can’t ask for much more.”
Big Red visits Wheeling Park at 4 p.m. today.
