FUS lacrosse finishes season

STEUBENVILLE – Unseasonably cold weather and a Division II opponent made for a tough ending to the Franciscan University of Steubenville men’s lacrosse season. Despite a promising first few minutes, visiting Walsh University upended the Barons, 20-3, Tuesday.

“That just was not our best effort,” head coach Pete Rosaschi said. “Walsh is a great program. They’re well coached. Maybe it was the freezing cold, maybe it was the … I don’t know what it was.”

A Luke Gilman goal made it 1-1 five minutes into the match.

Walsh then scored the next five goals.

“It’s pioneering,” Rosaschi said about his second-year program. “Out of 19 guys, six played high school lacrosse for four years. We played a really good team and sometimes you just have to accept that you’re going to take some licks.”

Joe Francis scored the other two goals for the Barons. It was his third multi-goal game of the season. It was also the last match for seniors Pat McNamara and Mike Fisher.

“Fisher was a newcomer to lacrosse last season and considering that he never played prior to college he did a wonderful job,” Rosaschi said. “Pat was a two-year captain for us and he has a very good shot. He showed that in our previous game with four goals and three assists.”

The Barons finished the season 1-14.

“We’ll get there. We have a good core coming back,” Rosaschi said. “I told the guys, ‘weight training for next season starts tomorrow.'”
