Porter’s hat trick leads Big Red

STEUBENVILLE – Sierra Porter scored three goals to lead Steubenville over Magnolia on Saturday, 5-1. Also scoring for Big Red were Emma Cotter and Marissa Howcroft. It lead 2-0 at half and 4-0 before Magnolia scored its lone goal late in the second half.

Hannah Hoover, Gillian Haught and Brigid O’Neil collected Steubenville’s assists.

Haught made two saves in goal.

“Our girls played a tremendous game and we got back to playing the way we are capable of playing,” said Big Red head coach Jared Robinson. “Our girls know how to focus on the positives and learn from their mistakes which is going to be very valuable down the road.”

Hudson scores two in Brooke win

BUCKHANNON – Cheyenne Hudson netted two goals in Brooke’s 2-1 win over Buckhannon-Upshur on Saturday. The goals were assisted by Jessie Wayne and Leile Hannaoui.

“It was a good result for playing different competition,” said Brooke head coach Lee Weppler. “We saw some different looks and different approaches from the teams we are usually used to playing. I’m happy to come back without a loss.”

The Bruins (1-0-1) tied with Winfield on Friday.

Payge Farmer made two saves in goal against Buckhannon-Upshur. Leah Stankus scored the Buccaneers’ goal on a Taylor Starkey assist.

Brooke is back in action Tuesday at Wheeling Park.

Madonna blows out Ravenswood

RAVENSWOOD – The Madonna girls soccer team topped Ravenswood, 10-1, on Saturday.

Gabby Kotten scored three goals to lead the Blue Dons. Rachel Grubbs and Gianna Antinone added two goals, while Anna Westfall, Hannah Barger and Lizzy Conforti scored one goal each.

Rachel Grubbs had three assists, while Leanna Grubbs had one. Bargar also had three assists, while Antinone had one.

Madonna had 24 shots on goal, while Ravenswood had 11. Chesney Hudson scored Ravenswood’s lone goal. Tessie Tokash had eight saves and Kasey Canei had two saves for Madonna.

Edison girls top Ridgewood

RICHMOND – Chelsea Petzker scored on a Bethanie Bube assist to lift the Edison girls soccer team to a 1-0 win over Ridgewood in its season opener on Saturday.

Ridgewood’s goaltender Karrie Bluck had 12 saves, while Edison’s Katie Oinonen had 2 saves. edison plays again

The Wildcats play St. Clairsville at home on Thursday.

Oak Glen beats Tyler

SISTERSVILLE – Kennedy Graves and Emily Bodo each scored a goal as the Oak Glen girls soccer team beat Tyler Consolidated, 2-0, in its season opener.

Bodo assisted Graves on her goal in the first half, while Kristine Magnano assisted on Bodo’s goal in the second half.

Erin Fields made eight saves in goal for the Golden Bears (1-0). They return to action Tuesday at Beaver Local.

  • In other girls soccer action, Cambridge beat Harrison Central, 4-0.

Edison blanks Carrollton

RICHMOND – The Edison boys soccer team topped Carrollton, 2-0, on Friday.

Cody Kuntupis and Alex Mariscal scored for the Wildcats. They attempted 12 total shots, eight were on goal.

Josh Woika made seven saves in net for Edison.

Oak Glen boys lose a pair

NEW CUMBERLAND – The Oak Glen boys soccer team fell, 12-0, to Fairmont Senior on Friday and lost, 5-3, to Tyler Consolidated on Saturday.

Nate Bennett made 22 saves against Fairmont and 35 saves against Tyler. Scoring for the Golden Bears were Addison Sayre, who netted two goals, and Nathan Fryer. Sayre assisted on Fryer’s goal.

Brooke boys fall, 9-1

BUCKHANNON – Garrison Mathison scored the lone goal for Brooke in its 9-1 loss to Buckhannon-Upshur on Saturday.

Chris Beaman made 22 saves in goal for the Bruins (0-1).

“We’re very young and have a long way to go,” said Brooke head coach Joe Pepe.

Brooke is scheduled to play at Wheeling Park on Thursday.

  • In other boys soccer action, Edison beat Harrison Central, 2-1 and Weir topped Fairmont Senior, 3-1.

Meadowbrook defeats Big Red

MEADOWBROOK – The Big Red volleyball team lost to Meadowbrook, 25-8. 25-14, 25-20 on Saturday.

Steubenville dropped to 2-1 on the year. It will host Indian Creek on Tuesday.

  • In other volleyball action, Conotton Valley downed Harrison Central: 25-12, 25-13, 25-15.

Football DH at Jimmy Carey Saturday

WEIRTON?- The Clash at the Carey will be held Saturday at Jimmy Carey Stadium.

Oak Glen will take on Edison at 4 p.m. in the opener.

Weir High will host Steubenville Catholic Central in the nightcap, at approximately 7:05 p.m.

The Junior Bears will take on the Little Steelers for approximately 30 minutes between games.

A convert by the Spinning Jennys will start the action at 3 p.m.

Cost is $10 per ticket for all of the festivities.

Oglebay Institute hold scramble

WHEELING – The Oglebay Institute, in conjunction with Kepner Funerl Homers, is hosting its first ever golf scramble on Sept. 22 at the Wheeling Country Club.

A shotgun start is slated for 12:30 p.m., with lunch being served on the course and a dinner afterwards.

Cancer awareness event to be held

STEUBENVILLE – The “Together for a Cure” soccer spectacular will be held Oct. 4 at Harding Stadium with four games.

It is the second year for the affair and breast cancer awareness fundraiser. Proceeds from the day will be donated to the T.E.A.R. (Trinity Emergency Assistance Relief) fund at Trinity’s Teramana Cancer Center.

The event raised $9,000 last year.

The scheduled games are:

8 a.m. girls – Steubenville vs. Edison

10 a.m. boys – Indian Creek vs. Edison

Noon girls – Indian Creek vs. Catholic Central

2 p.m. boys – Steubenville vs. Catholic Central

Creek selling tickets

WINTERSVILLE – The Indian Creek Athletic Department will have pre-sale tickets for Friday’s football game at Brooke available for purchase from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Friday.

Adult tickets are $5 and student are $3. All tickets at the gate are $5. Friday’s game starts at 7:30 p.m.

Oak Glen alumni weekend upcoming

NEW CUMBERLAND – The Oak Glen Alumni Association is planning its Alumni Weekend for Sept. 11-13.

An alumni volleyball game will take place on Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m., followed by an alumni football game and cheering event at 7 p.m.

The Golden Bears varsity football team hosts Indian Creek at 7 p.m. on Sept. 12 with decade displays and hospitality room for alumni in the lower gym.

A school tour will conclude the weekend at 9 a.m. on Sept. 13, with a noon boys soccer game against Steubenville. At 8 p.m. an alumni social will be held at the Chester VFW.
