Indian Creek girls shut out Cambridge

MINGO JUNCTION — Keeping possession of the ball is key in soccer.

Thanks to some good passing and communication, the Indian Creek girls’ soccer team was able to control the ball against Cambridge, and the Redskins scored five goals in the first half en route to a 5-0 victory against the Bobcats Saturday afternoon at Muth Field.

“They played more like a team today,” Indian Creek (1-1-1) head coach Joe Lewis said. “They talked. They communicated. They were able to link passes together instead of making one pass and giving the ball up. Being able to link passes together put us in better position.”

The girls from Jefferson County outshot the girls from Guernsey County, 26-4, in the game, and the hosts took 21 shots on goal, while the visitors took two.

“In the second half, I adjusted our lineup,” Cambridge (0-3) head coach Tracy Fox said. “We shut down their through balls. We communicated a lot better.

“We settled down. I moved people around to give us a stronger formation. We played with more confidence in the second half.”

Kelsey Lewis tallied two goals to lead the way for the girls in white, Sloane Lewis collected a goal and an assist and Hallie Schmitt and Madison Smith each scored a goal. Also, Madelyn Yoho delivered two assists.

The Redskins used three goalies in the game. Katie Scott started the game in goal, and she played the entire first half. Scott did not make a save in the first 40 minutes. She faced one shot.

Sydney LaRue and Beyonce Dudley each saw time in goal in the second half. LaRue and Dudley each made one save.

Cambridge goalie Karlee Bruns was under siege for the entire first half. Bruns ended the game with 15 saves, and Lilly Ritz recorded a save by clearing the ball out from in front of the goal.

The Bobcats took nine goal kicks in the game, while the Redskins took three. The girls in blue took two corner kicks, while the winners took one.

“Our passing enabled us to control the ball,” Coach Lewis said. “In the first half, we controlled the ball down on their end of the field. We were able to keep possession. We made good passes. In our first couple of games, we were passing but not communicating. Today, we passed the ball and we communicated.”

Indian Creek has some speed up top, and the Redskins were able to use that to their advantage.

“I knew they were a big team,” Coach Lewis said. “They have some big girls. They have three girls who are close to 6-feet.

“We played them last year, and they beat us up pretty bad.

“The other night, we played East Liverpool, and we were up 2-0 down to the final 14 minutes of the game. They came back to score two goals to tie it. I told the kids that when you are up by two goals like that and the other team comes back to tie you it feels like a loss.

“The girls came out focused today. They really wanted to get that first win.”

Indian Creek opened the scoring seven minutes into the game, and then they had another goal 20 minutes to take a 2-0 lead before tallying its third goal of the game three minutes later.

Then, the Redskins tacked on two more goals before halftime.

Indian Creek also had a goal called back due to a player being offside.

“They scored early, and our heads dropped,” Fox said. “We got lost in the first half as far as our responsibilities with our positions. We cleaned that up in the second half.”

Cambridge is schedule to play at 6 p.m. Tuesday out at Coshocton.

Indian Creek is scheduled to play at 5 p.m. Wednesday at home against Jefferson County rival Catholic Central.

“It feels very good to get our first win,” Coach Lewis said. “I don’t ever remember us beating Catholic Central. They have a strong team.”
