Park defeats Brooke for first win of season

WHEELING — The Wheeling Park girls’ soccer team got its first win of the year in impressive fashion.

Against rival Brooke Tuesday, the Patriots had five players score goals and were almost never threatened in the first half in a 5-2 win at Wheeling Island Stadium.

“We just encourage team play, good possessional play,” Wheeling Park (1-1) coach Carrie Hanna said. “We find each other and we find the right pass and we just worked together as a team.”

Morgan Glass put the Patriots on the board first, giving them a lead they would not relinquish.

Brooke’s goalkeeper made an attempt to try to save the ball, but Glass had perfect control of it as she saw the back of the net and put the ball in the back of it to put the score at 1-0 with 23:19 to go in the first half.

It looked like it was going to be 2-0 as junior Lauren Schultz appeared to score, but an offsides on Wheeling Park was called.

“Brooke did a great job of playing the offsides trap,” Hanna said. “We struggled a little bit, especially at the beginning of the game to adjust to that. Then we talked about that at halftime about how to beat that and they did a much better job in the second half.”

With 7:52 to play in the first half, Abbey Anderson gave Wheeling Park a comfortable lead as she picked off a pass, and saw no one in front of her but the goalie and scored to put the score at 2-0 in favor of the Patriots.

In the second half, Schultz put her name in the stat book with an impressive goal. Controlling the ball, she was swarmed by Bruins but she was able to get around them and tapped the ball with ease to make it 3-0.

The Bruins got on the board and after Jena Riccelli found the back of the net on a perfect corner kick and the score read 3-1 with 14:11 left.

The momentum, however, was short-lived for Brooke.

A little over a minute later, Wheeling Park responded with Sarah Heilman putting the lead back up to three goals, 4-1.

“This year we are facing some new challenges,” Brooke coach Elias Hannaoui said. “This is the first time in 20 years that we didn’t have a JV team. We have a small roster and a lot of injuries. It’s tough. Wheeling Park can sub 10, 11 girls and we cannot keep up with their pace. They’re well-coached.

“Hopefully, we can get some of our players back who are injured in the next week or so. We should be in better shape than (Tuesday), definitely. Wheeling Park dominated and they deserved to win.”

Jada Taylor tallied the final goal of the game for the Patriots off an assist from Glass to put the score at 5-1.

Daisy Reasbeck, Eldana Smith and Lucy Harman also dished out assists for the Patriots.

Leila Hannaoui secured the final goal of the game with a perfect kick in the left corner .
