’Rocks sweep Panthers

CONNORVILLE — Buckeye Local gave Barnesville everything it had and then some Wednesday evening, but in the end, the more seasoned Shamrocks found a way to get the job done.

Mya McEndree scored 20 points, dished out 10 assists and had nine digs to help Barnesville hand the debuting Panthers a 25-20, 25-12, 25-22 defeat on their home court in prep volleyball action.

”We have our moments,” Barnesville head coach Nikki McEndree said after watching her squad move to 2-0. ”When we play well, we play well.

”Sometimes, we struggle and let four or five points get away from us. But I was glad we pulled back. It wasn’t pretty, but a win’s a win.”

After overcoming an early Buckeye Local challenge to pull away in Game 1, Barnesville found the going much easier in Game 2.

However, the Panthers found their way in Game 3 behind senior Destiny Christian, who finished with five kills and seven digs.

It was part of an evening of steady improvement for Buckeye Local and, as head coach Jeremy Millard pointed out, something his team can improve on.

”After Game 1 I could see the girls were surprised with themselves,” he said. ”I wasn’t surprised because I know that’s how they can play.

”You can’t have four really good plays and then seven bad ones. We have to be more consistent. But all of that will come with time and how we trust each other on the court. We’re getting better.”

Barnesville jumped out to a 4-0 start in Game 3 before watching Buckeye Local tie it at 9-9. It was one of seven deadlocks in the final game.

”We were struggling with our hitting and our back row people weren’t moving like they normally do,” Coach McEndree noted.

A Mya McEndree ace, coupled with a Panthers miscue, helped the Shamrocks go ahead 16-12.

Buckeye Local soon got control of the serve and closed to with one at 17-16 thanks to a Christian shot and a Barnesville shot that went long.

The Panthers tied the score at 20-20 when Lillie Windsheimer dropped a shot in. Her team took the lead moments later.

Barnesville then scored three straight points to gain control of the game and match, starting with a block at the net by Leah Wells.

”They picked it up at the end when we needed them to,” Coach McEndree said. ”After we were struggling, we were able to overcome that and play better.”

Ashley Brown added 14 points and five digs for the Shamrocks, while Wehr and Candace Schneider had 11 and six kills, respectively.

Carrie Dill added six kills and four digs for Buckeye Local and Windsheimer had five digs.

Barnesville returns to action Monday at Caldwell, while Buckeye Local welcomes Indian Creek that same evening.
